It could also be a very recently installed driver. On one of my PCs I have an ASUS GForce 2 and for some reasons it does not like the latest Detonator driver I installed recently. Ar various stages of having my PC on, the blighter started to switch off in the middle of doing something, sometimes when already on for half an hour. It took me a long time to track this down as it did not happen at startup, when drivers loaded up.

It would also help if you post your PCs specs as Avis mentions.

In case you do not know how to dual install both Window system, here goes:
Have Win98 first on your system first, when you have the WinXP CD booting up, use NEW install and choose the location where to install WinXP yourself (in "Advanced" options at the install screen). then nominate your second drive's letter as the install place. This will take most drivers (right or wrong!) from Win98 as the drivers for WinXP when WinXP installs. Even most old hardware will run this way as it did with me.

In WinXP's options after installing it, you can change which Win OS boots up first but a word of caution. If you want to use programs like ACDSee, Photoshop, Dreamweaver or those which write to the registry and you want to use them in both Windows, you need to install them in different locations on your h/disks for each OS separate, Games usually do not need to be twice installs but there might be exceptions.

Normally in dual boot setups it is definately worth installing a new driver set, particularly using Win9x and Win2k onwards, combinations. Some drivers installed for Win98 are still basically 16 bit which are not loved in full 32 bit operating systems based on NT technology such as Win2000/WinXP (which are basicallyWinNT5 and 6). It is possible your machine is suffering from iffy memory. Does this only happen in games, or any application. If only games I would suspect display drivers, or sound drivers playing up.

I would be only too happy to tell you how to format your hard drive, although my motives are more sinister than you may realise.

Formatting:
Simple enough process. Back up eveything you don't want to lose, find (or make) a bootdisk and prepare to format both drives (EG: "Get a beer"). for the purposes of this exercise, we'll say that your larger capacity drive is C, the smaller is D and the CD drive is E.

Get a bootdisk (or make one) and put it in the floppy drive. As long as the BIOS is set to boot from the floppy, your computer will boot from the floppy rather than the hard drive. When this is done, type:

format C:\

When that's done, type:

format D:\

Windows installation
Congratulations, you now have two complely clean drives. Pop in the Windows 98 CD and set the BIOS to boot from it. Install Windows 98 on the lower capacity drive, but when the computer restarts through the installation, pop back to the BIOS and set the computer to boot from the lower capacity drive. Finish the installation, reset the computer and set the BIOS to boot from the CD again.

Do as above with the XP installation, but install it on the larger capacity drive. You'll have a boot menu made for you by XP, but if you don't, don't worry about it too much, we can help you out there.
