Would you walk into a falling down, burning building to maybe rescue someone who isnt even there for 13k a year...?????? No neither would I. Im not sure where you got your figure from BTW, when i tried out for the fire service, starting pay was 16.James* wrote:Yea, they get £13,000 a year and want £30,000 which I think is a bit too much to ask for. Iam sure I heard NewYork Firemen saying, they work for the job not the money. Oh the shame the shame![]()

when i wanted to join, I did want the job more than the money, but nowadays, folk cant live on £16,000 a year as easily as a few years back, plus when you think of the service they provide, dodging all the abuse and violence which firefighters deal with, BEFORE they have to do thier dangerous job, i think a pay rise relative to thier bosses isnt much to ask. Whether they will get £30,000, if that figure is correct is another matter, but aiming high is the whole idea of asking for a rise.

The fire service are asking for a 40% pay increase which would take them to £30k--this means the current average pay must be around £22k.cappedup wrote:Would you walk into a falling down, burning building to maybe rescue someone who isnt even there for 13k a year...?????? The current starting salary for a trainee Fireman is £17k, Once trained it's just short of £22k, However once you add shift allowance, and the bonus they get for sleeping in the station, it rises dramatically.
Not that I'm saying they don't deserve it, Hell I work night's, and fully deserve the extra 1/3 I get..I/They see our partners very little, have no social life, etc.
However Most of us don't get Free meal's at work, pool tables, fruit machines etc.
Please don't misunderstand me, Our Firemen are very brave dedicated individuals, who do a great service to us all, But 40%??
BTW the above facts come from a friend of mine, who is a Fireman.
I work in an evironment where minor injuries happen all the time, and unfortunately major injuries, and fatalities also happen (if rarely), for example, one of my ex-workmates, lost his right hand, and another has lost most of the flesh from his right arm, along with 75% use.
The point, I would be happy to get 11%..in fact about 2 months ago I did. My first payrise in 2 1/2 years.
This is not intended to start a flame, but to put across the facts (From the horses mouth as it were) and to point out, that while our Firemen do, do a dangerous job....They aren't alone.

Different parts of the country earn different amounts. A fireman in London will earn more then a fireman in Yorkshire.
My dad was a fireman from the age of 16 to 50 when he retired, then trained fireman for a couple of years before cancer got the better of him 2 years ago (Inhaled so many dangerous chemicals in the old days before they had breathing apparatus. They used to walk out of buildings covered in asbestos before they knew it was dangerous).
My brother in law joined about 2 years ago now.
While I do agree they deserve more money, as someone pointed out a couple of weeks ago, they knew there was no money in the job when they signed up. Nursing, teaching, emergancy services: these are all traditionaly vocations rather then careers, but this concept may be out of date in today's world.
Suggesting that the fireman get free meals isn't exactly a good thing. e.g. when it is my brother in laws turn to cook, they all buy takeways instead so they don't get ill from his food.
Fruit machine and pool table? We had that when I worked at the supermarket as a student. And while they are not working, they are practicing, cleaning the equipment etc.
Don't get me wrong, I do think they desrve more money, but again, they did know the risks before hand.
Also I believe the 40% was used so they can be bargained down to 20% or 25% etc.
