Freighter ship not targetable after some components are destroyed

Post by Kapakio »

I haven't seen this bug reported before, but each time I decide to destroy some components (like engines, some turrets, etc.) before executing the boarding command, the ship is not targetable anymore, so there's no way to execute the board command.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

Yes. I get this pretty often. Up to now I was always able to fix it by hovering the mouse cursor over the bridge of the freighter (In case it is a Rahannas, don't know if this also works for other ships, maybe it is a different location then). Notice that the mouse cursor changes there. Now click it once at this location and the target rectangle is back.

Another workaround: Quicksave/Quickload.

I have this bug as well, - another work around is to open your zone map, highlight your target in the ship list and plot a course to it.

This will target it and set it as an objective, allowing you to execute the boarding command.

Keep in mind that if you do this when you are close to the target, the 'fly to X' objective you've just established will disappear as it completes due to your proximity, causing you to lose lock again.

So get some distance first, or just execute the board command really quickly after closing the map.

Also, anecdotally speaking I've noticed that my boarding procedures tend to fail if I strip a ship's turrets before sending out the pods.

Possibly because the 'distraction' objectives are dependent on having surface structures to destroy and each one completed boosts your squad's chance of success.

If you destroy turrets first, there's not as much stuff to blow up to boost your marine's combat rating.

Wouldn't make any sense if working as intended - but this is Rebirth so anything's possible.

But it might just be an unfortunate coincidence in my attempts thus far.

I capped dozens of freighters by using this method. First I destroy the engine and the hyperdrive so the ship can't flee. Then I destroy all the weapons. Then I start the boarding operation (After fixing the target to workaround the targeting bug). Then I still have two shield generators to blow up to speed up the boarding operation. When I'm told to hack some stuff or to destroy the drone launcher, then I simply do nothing and wait. Boarding never failed for me.

So I guess you simply need more and better marines?

Are they meant to boost the chance of success? I thought this only speeds up the boarding operation.

when i have this problem i found that go to crew and come back and it makes things targetable again.

That also lets you select components that were restored after being wrecked.

Good one, thanks! I also wondered how to target destroyed component that have been fixed.

None of that ever happens to me, but then again I haven't capped a Rahanas since 1.13 I think?

I did however cap a Light Sul today and the turrets on in the middle top of the ship cannot be targeted. Those turrets are encompassed by the really big "info square". If you try to target something inside that square, you just click the info square instead. That was a long and challenging cap! :D

Its not a bug per se, but that info square needs to be rethought. Perhaps it would work to reverse the mouseclick priority. Give clicking directly on the parts of the 3d model precedence over that info square.

Yes I have this bug as well. VERY annoying. Usually happens when you take out several subsystems THEN target directly one and then untarget it then the main ship becomes untargetable. This is sometimes can be resolved by flying away from the target 20km+ then the selection will appear again.
Also once when I saved the game mid fight then reloaded my target was gone. Dunno if this is intended or not.

There is a workaround:

If you can´t target do the follow steps:
- open sectormap with .
- select the ship you will capture
- press 4 for detail
- press 3 for plot course
- double click the "red square" and select boarding
