[IDEA] Long range scanner + a new use for ship wrecks

Post by Anubitus »

We all know you can make use of the long range scanner to get rich in a small amount of time.. Altho this is a fun part of the game, at least i think so, it also feels a bit like cheating to me.. There is no point in waiting 20-30 minutes to make 30000 cr profit with a freighter when you can make 300000 cr in the same time with the long range scanner.. :)

So this got me thinking, if we remove the scattered cargo, it will take away the exploring and treasure hunting feeling.. So, how about we put some ship wrecks instead, like from some battle or something.. There can still be some cargo floating about from the destroyed ships but not as many..

Wich takes me to another idea i had, how about we make it so that all the ships we and npc's have destroyed stay where they are, let the wrecks not dissapear when we leave the zone but just leave them there.. Then we could have the option to recycle the wrecks into teladianium panneling, engine parts, microchips etc.. These could be used to build your own ships or just to sell or keep as a souvnir or whatever.. :p

Also make some NPC ships hunt these wrecks.. This as a work around for the cluttering of space by all the ships left by battles..

To recyle these wrecks we would need a special type of transport ship.. It could make use of the mining laser to get the materials out of the wrecks..

It would be cool to enter a zone and see the remains of a big battle.. Amongst the wrecks is one from a capital ship floating in space and you call for your recycle freighter and start getting matterials.. :D

That way the wrecks we find with the long range scanner can be put to good use aswell..

Just a thought.. :)

Yep, I was thinking about this the other day. I'm thinking we don't have the ability to implement this yet, though.
Maybe we could have 'salvage' drones that loot the wrecks.
Maybe to avoid the clutter, just have a script run once every hour and if there are more than X wrecks in the zone, have a station send out a salvage ship.
You don't talks about X:Rebirth...

Long range scanning is a special dynamic mission type. Like most mission types, it spawns the stuff it needs.

It would be nice to have salvage missions that have cargo crates and ships and the like. Ship recycling is also another "might be cool" thing to boost the economics of warfare.

Do you mean that if you dont activate the long range scanner, the cargo thingys arent out there..? They are spawned the moment you activate the scanner just for us to find..? Well that sucks.. :(

I've found these cargo things without the scanner, before, too. It's darn hard but possible.

But you can somehow harvest wrecks for resources.
There are many wrecks near highways in DeVries, and when you target them, the Skunk monitor shows the resource yield.

I think that's meant for the Reivers. Their stations have a recycling component. Not sure if it works actually. Or what to do with the unknown ware they drop. Those get "known" after picking up with a freighter???

Those ship wreckage things don't seem to be any different from normal asteroids. Some have an ore yield and most are barren.

i like the idea of salvaging old Station/ship wrecks, doing it in the same design/manor the asteroids are harvested seems like a good approach.

x3tc had something close to this as a mod but was never hard coded into the game, Shame!

hopefully this is IDEA becomes part of the future game and not just some MOD.
