I read somewhere that maxxing everything out makes the game run better than turning them down, I forgot the explanation as to why that is, you could try it with your rig, should be okay.

So far the best settings for me are (and they still don't provide optimal results on my computer [specs listed below] so far)

AA 0x (anti aliasing, it smooths jagged lines, while mine is set to 0, I really don't see a proportionate drop in FPS by switching from 0x to 4x or even 8x)

Lod 0 (Level of Detail, when you play around with this option sliding it to the left means you don't see as much detail from further away, you can usually see this if you are near to a station and slide it left and right you'll see detail fade in and out.

View Distance 0 (self explanatory really, how far you can see before things fade out)

Effect distance 0 (how far you will see special effects on your screen, lower numbers mean you don't see as far the effects)

Fullscreen Yes (self explanatory, but many games get better performance running in full screen rather than window)

Shadows Off (self explanatory)

Shaders Low (well, low gives better performance than high, but try normal if high is too much for your computer to handle)

SSAO Off (Here I'll just provide a link for the explanation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_spa ... _occlusion )

That may get you going.

I can get a whole 5 fps by turning everything off, its not worth it. This game needs to be optimized, theres no excuse why my $2500 brand new gaming rig cant run this game maxed with at least 60fps

There currently is no optimal settings. The game needs more optimization patches first. A lot of high-end machines seems to perform very bad on this game. While mid machines seems to perform much better then high-end.
Motherboard: Sabertooth 990FX R2
Processor: AMD FX-8320 3500 (4800Mhz)
Videocard: AMD HD7870 2GB
Memory: 16GB DDR3 (1600Mhz)
OS: Windows 7 64bit
X-Rebirth Avg. FPS: 20-25

To show my ignorance - wearing it proudly like a badge of honor. How is everyone monitoring FPS? NVIDIA 560M. I've looked by can't seem to see where it would be displayed.

thanks in advance.

download fraps and simply have it open in the background while you run the game. you can also take screenshots and videos with fraps

or just add this simple text to the launch settings in Steam under properties.

"-showfps" without the ""
it will be in the lower corner of the screen
also

-skipintro well, i think you can figure out what that does.
