NPC stats

Post by jerryt87 »

Hi all. I only get "?" when viewing the stats for NPC's. I have seen other people who apparently actually get the star ratings.

Has anyone else had this problem, and managed to get it fixed?

Thanks.

Working as intended. You unlock NPC skills display by playing the smalltalk minigame with other NCs on the same station.
A dog has a master; a cat has domestic staff.

What about defense Officers. I've been to around 10 docks with them officers on it, gone to ever npc and got the unlocks for every other type of officer/pilot/manager and architect apart from the defense officers.

The smalltalk minigame confused me at first as the option was never available.

However to get the smalltalk option, you need to wait until an NPC says something, if you click on the NPC the smalltalk option will be available (it replaces "Where Can I find?") on the radial menu.

Unfortunately the smalltalk minigame is useless for the NPC you're talking to, they will sometimes direct you to a DIFFERENT NPC (sometimes it's a completely different type of employee, e.g an Engineer will direct you to a Pilot) that they are. You will then see the stats of the NPC that you have been directed to.

It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense and it's completely exasperating.

Get the NESA mod, and free yourself from that. http://xrebirth.nexusmods.com/mods/18/?

Maybe it's intended, but that seriously makes the game annoying, fortunately there are now mods that can remove those minigames.

I don't see any station-related achievement, so I don't think it will. Would that really matter if it did anyway?

Reducing the difficulty in finding a suitable employee after 'winning' the smalltalk minigame was addressed by Bernd in the progress report sticky at the top of this forum.
- Giving you a choice of NPCs with good known skills after "winning" a smalltalk (so the reward is no longer random)
...
- Improve how NPCs are labeled to make it clearer who does what
...
- Improve the "asking for people" conversation

Hiring guys will usually make their skills visible. Getting random stats is not a big deal unless you want someone important like a marine officer or station specialist.

Not the ones I've hired. I'll see if I can get the above suggestion to work.

I hope they improve the small talk options / variety of conversations - talking about AI/AGI, Highways etc. all the time is getting rapetative now.

As of 1.17, "winning" the smalltalk minigame still doesn't allow me to see an NPC's stats without hiring them, unless I'm just being unlucky and there's a random chance.

Or does this mean that winning the smalltalk minigame tells you the way to an NPC with known stats? In that case, it's very rarely useful, because most of the time the NPC is not of the type that I'm looking for.

It seems a bit pic'n mix for me. Sometimes if the officer is on the same station, his stats are revealed after doing the minigame for someone else. Sometimes their stats are still hidden. I thought their skills upgraded over time anyway as you use them?

When you win the mini-game it is not that you get to know the stats of that person. But there is a chance that the person gives you the stats for another NPC on the station that you may hire. But also that is just one outcome of a few, others being a discount on wares that the NPC offers (the NPC you played with, and if he happens to be a trader), or a discount on the wares of the station you are on.

If they plan to change it, it would make sense that you get the stats of the person you played with - after all he is there to be hired and he likes us
