Losing target due to mission hints?

The mission hints that pop up sometimes seem to break the current target lock. If I click on an enemy ship and the hints pop up (the yellow shrinking circles appear and the message "destroy enemies" appears at the bottom of the screen) any target lock resets and I have to find the ship I was firing on again.

Usually it's only once in a while but sometimes it seems to glitch and repeatedly reset the targeting system.
