I read the thread about this issue and that it had been hotfix'd.

In steam, I re-verified all my files and it's up-to-date, but I'm still getting this bug.

Is there a manual patch I can apply, and if so, where is it?

Otherwise, count this as a report of the hotfix not working.

Try just exiting the Steam client completely (not just closing the window to the system tray) and restarting it.

Done, and the issue is still present. Restarted Steam, gave it a couple minutes to update on it's own, had no activity. Set the game to high priority for updates, nothing. Re-validated files, nothing.

Dunno what the deal is. Is there a way I can manually apply the hotfix?

No, you can't apply it manually. My suggestion, since it's a relatively minor thing, is to simply wait for the next update.

Ask for skills, it's always blank.

skills being blank is a bug atm and seems to only be doing it in albion, when i got to devries in my new save yesterday i could see the normal ?????'s I think your rep has to be good before you see the actual skills

aaaaahhhhh that actually makes sense.

It would be better tho instead of ????? to show "need higher rep with this faction" or something in the same space.

i agree ive only made it about 8 hours in on my first save and i only ever saw 1 guy that actually showed me his skills

I watched the start stats flash away in an instant with the first crew i looked at then they were all gone. I am also having this issue, Just as i went to go re-crew all of my ships with more suitable employees.

Unless reffered to you from another NPC via smalltalk you can only see skill level after you have hired them and assigned to a position. with that being said you will see the question marks still but the bug is preventing the star skill level from showing.

It's sort of like having to buy a game before you can see if you want it or not

This (blank skills, no ????) was fixed in a 1.15 hotfix. If you were still having the issue after the hotfix then 1.16 update would have refreshed your game or you can use the Steam verify gamefiles cache tool on X Rebirth at any time to check that you have the up to date files.

If you want to uncover the skill list of a potential employee, you can play the conversation mini-game and get a referral. Once you have a referral, the skills will show. You wont always get the the right employee, but keep at it at a station and you can uncover some great stats this way.

My game is updated to 1.17 and still only shows a question mark for any of the npc skill list. I really don't want to waste creds to find one npc for the crew. I do the referral conversations and it still doesn't sh ow the star rating system. Any hope this will be fixed in 1.18?

though it totally makes no sense .. If I want to hire a certain person and ask for their skills - it would be normal they show me what they can BEFORE I hire them .. not after I have them ..

I mean - even Yisha says before hiring the first captain that I should check their skill - what sense makes it that I dont see their skills before hiring .. illogical

385 hrs in and they still only show by reference. Someone has to referrer you to them in order for them to show their skills. My highest rep is 26

I know, i know, it has been a few years between post 1 and mine, but in 2015 we are at update 3.5, and still no skill visible. What did CBJ say???
And @shootist, is it normal to hire a person without knowing if he/she can actually do the job? So anyone trying to say that they have to gain skills before the questionmarks change in stars is also wrong. I just hired an engineer, and the price was about 40000, so putting her on the job, i went looking for her and she showed three out of five stars in engineering. Before that i hired her she showed me ??????? question marks.
So you tell me this bug has been taken care of, i say NO!
Maybe they are busy playing Unreal tournament?
