Long time player - Lurking
I have been lurking behind the scenes watching all the flaming both here and on the Steam forums. I have tried really hard to ignore it knowing that 98% of them have never touched an X-Game in their lives and 1% were just jumping on the bandwagon of hate.
Has anyone else been holding back finding it really hard to find anything to say to defend Egosoft? I was really hoping to see some kind of announcement that would reassure me that everything was going to be ok. But all I saw was further disapointment with a self-congratulatory post from Bernd about how successful the sales have been. Thanks for sweeping it all under the carpet Bernd.
I appreciate the list of to-do's and bug fixing etc.. that you announced but I need you to acknowledge that all these people aren't all idiots - they have good reason to be upset - as do I.
I really loved Egosoft and their previous games. I was so looking forward to X-Rebirth - it looks beautiful but it is a complete mess on the inside. You really need to acknowledge something rather than delete posts from your forums and just pretend it isn't happening.
I loaded up X3:AP today - it hit me in the face how deep it was - how nice the maps were and how detailed the information available to me was. It really came across like I was looking at a sequel to X-Rebirth not the other way around. It made me feel confused that this was made by the same people who just released X-Rebirth.
I look at his game and I seriously cannot understand what they have been doing for the last 7 years.

You go as far back as I do
(X BTF) Ground breaking game for empire building space sim.
(X Tension) Again adding and improving on the first.
(X" The Threat) Giant leap forward for the X series.
(X3 The reunion) Another Great leap forward.
(X3 TC-AP) Again adding to the X universe.
(X Rebirth) Some how took a giant leap back in most regards.
But I do see the potential behind the engine its self if you can look passed the mess bolted to it, like I said before the modding community for the X universe is vast and they will be the ones that fix most of the mess as they have been going already.
The game its self is like a messed up jigsaw egosoft gave us to put together witch was wrong of them...but its done now so let just get it sorted

I agree. This Rebirth has been born dead. It may be gorgeous superficially (space at least), but inside it is shallow and empty.
If only it was possible to take that superficial beauty and fill it with all the richness of X3 it would be something really great.

I'm an oldie as well.
I think the greatest triumph of this game is how alive space feels. Thankfully I haven't had any of the gamebreaking bugs. I had a bug with the console thing but it resolved itself after I landed.
I didn't have any preconceived notions and when they said it was not a another X game in the long long leadup, I believed them. For me it helps to think of X Rebirth as a re-imagining of X BTF.
As many of you, I'm a longtime gamer and have been burned by big releases before. With Rebirth I waited, read all the negatives, watched hours of Twitch.tv and then decided the things that bothered most did not bother me as much.
Had I expected X4, not read the post launch threads, or watched any Twitch gameplay...I might be upset.
I did, however, and I enjoy the game a lot and look forward to Egosoft and modders smoothing out the edges. I think we all have our lists of things we'd like to see, but I'm happy with my purchase.

Lots of old timers on here that seem to be 'jumping on the bandwagon'...toocherbert1701 wrote:I have been lurking behind the scenes watching all the flaming both here and on the Steam forums. I don't care that the game isn't the same as X3:R, TC or AP. I always play as a trader and I'll be honest that I've often gotten bored with trading in the X universe, because it takes an awfully long time before you start making any money.
I love the games, but they can be rather tedious at times.
I was kinda looking forward to the new direction X:R was going in, but I didn't expect them to completely botch it up. Instead of an easier, quicker trading system we have a broken one. Instead of being able to buy and pilot other ships, you're stuck in the biggest heap in the universe while you hire badly animated AI to fly them for you. And even when the game starts and you want to be a trader in 'free play' mode, the Albion Skank (not a typo) is so bloody useless that it can't actually do any trading, so you have to wander from station to station buying things from vendors and selling them to other vendors, or just helping yourself to anythng you see lying around inside the stations. And don't even get me started on the deep space salvaging.... Seriously, how much junk is out there? Did some mass cargo ship massacre take place on the edges of all the habitable zones? Surely if this is wreckage from pirate attacks there'd be more pirates out there, at least something to do, a threat to make going after the containers more challenging, and stop the thing being so bloody tedious.
X3 may have been slow, and in the early days of a space career borderline boring, but at least they gave you a decent ship to trade with and you weren't forced to become some intergalactic hobo routing though bins and canisters... Forcing you to stay in the Albion Skank is a massive limitiation. It's be much easier if you could sell the heap of junk and buy a proper trading ship stright away.

Although I came late to the party, Steam says I've put 999 hours into AP, so I'm not exactly a rookie, either. I'm just insulted beyond words that I'm expected to loot crates, crawl through air ducts, and scan for infinitely-respawning free-money crates in deep space instead of (or even in addition to) legitimately making money. It feels so cheap and fake, which is diametrically opposite to the feeling that kept me in the AP universe for nearly a thousand hours.

I had such high hopes for this game but it's left a very sour taste in my mouth. Bugs will be fixed I accept that and modders will sort the rest but the fundamental feel of the game just doesn't grip me like any of the previous titles.
For now though, I have deleted it and will return in 6 months or so and I certainly won't recommend it to any of my followers.

Good to see I may not be quite the oldest person here. Or at least not alone in my old age.cherbert1701 wrote:Thats a blast from the past. Had forgotten all about that! I remember picking up BC3K from a local Electronics Boutique store, how pumped I was to finally have that shiny silver box in my hands! And then the tragedy of it... Oh the tragedy! Following the exploits of Dr. Derek Smart, PhD became quite the lively bit of entertainment afterwards, though.

Keep lurking... The game, may, or may not become what it should be. That's up in the air. Give it a few months to see what the patches do.
I'm worried about the mechanics though. It seems the game expanded a couple of areas (space looks nice, combat is fun), but went back a LOT on other areas (pretty much everything else), and added some stuff that does not help the X gameplay at all. 1st, moving around the station looking for a parking place out of like 6 different ones. Oh, and no way to get directions to the one you want. Then station walking, no way to interact with bases, having to hunt down 1 person in a huge base by walking all over the place instead of out in space actually playing). It's like somehow the internet stopped working in a universe where we have ships, and space highways, and jump drives, and massive stations and capital ships. Why the heck can't I open X-Skype and talk to the person I want to hire and have him wait for me at the dock?
Really, the design decisions for many core aspects of the game went backwards instead of forward. And that is possibly something that will not change. That is the part that has me worried.
