Crash on save

So I was playing like normal, didn't do anything special. I was inside a station and decided to save before returning to my ship in case the cockpit bugs out, except the message I got after I hit save was "Save Failed" instead of the usual success message. I tried saving again and the game crashed with an error message about a serious save game error or something. I reloaded the game and the slot I tried saving in (overwriting a previous save) was completely empty.

Any ideas on why this could happen? Its pretty frustrating to know not even saving your game is safe to do.
