Claimed ship hostile

Just claimed a Maelchon, the pilot bailed and I destroyed the pod.
Found that I had to get a pilot to claim the ship, so quickly found a pilot on a station and flew back and claimed the ship.

Thought I would inspect the looks of the ship by flying around it, and found as soon as I move in front of the ship it autofires at me

I have not given it any orders yet, so maybe that fixes it. Or maybe I just hired an idiot pilot with a triggerhappy finger?

Setting it to join my squad made no differnce, now it will shoot at me whenever it get me in its crosshairs.

Why did you destroyed the pod?
have you tried to leave the ship there, change sector, save, restart the game and get back there?
