Game executable is 32-bit and some testing

Post by SpaceBrotha »

As most have noticed, the game has some slight issues with framerates. In an attempt to figure out where the bottleneck was, I put HWiNFO64 on my second screen, as well as task manager.

First thing i noticed was that the game shows up as a 32 bit application in the process tab, based on the *32 next to the process name. Which is a curious thing, but seeing as the game never took more than 1,4gb of ram, i doubt that's the main problem either.

I booted a new free play and just started spinning in place where the game started.

I have an i7 3770k, 8gb ram and radeon HD 7870.
Settings at almost minimum (1080p and shaders at normal, others off, view distance and effect distance at 30)

Still getting massive fps drops whenever something other than empty space was in view.

HWiNFO was showing GPU utilization at 85% and task manager was showing cpu utilization at a paltry 20 something %, looking at performance tab, seeing four of the eight logical cores utilized at slightly above 40% at all times.

So CPU, GPU nor RAM (even for 32-bit program) fully utilized, yet fps horrendous, what gives?

One reason could be blocking threads, I have no idea how the game is programmed, but if there's a point where on screen stuff causes strain on one thread or another, and other threads wait for that one thread or two to finish, you could see FPS drops even when not everything is fully utilized.

It would also explain why some very high end systems have very little to no FPS drops: Their hardware is simply so high end that no one thread ever becomes a bottleneck.

Another reason could of course be that 85% GPU is the best my system can give and the GPU really is the bottleneck, even though it's like two generations better than the recommended GFX card.

Then there's the possibility that similar to what happened with Skyrim happened here: "Forgot to use optimization in the compiler options, whoops."

I don't know, but I hope this helps the devs even slightly in figuring out what's up because I really want to play but <20fps when something is on screen is infuriating.

I don't have the game, but have you considered overheating as a possible source of bad performance? A firend of mine had annoying fps drops until he found out his cpu cooler was not attached properly.

Have a look at your processor's clock rate during gameplay. When the Windows ( 8 ) Task Manager shows 40% cpu usage, it can mean your CPU is used 100% but clocked down to 40% of nominal clock rate.
This is generally a good thing that happens to protect your hardware when things go wrong.

It does not have to be the CPU overheating. On my rig, the voltage regulator chips (next to the socket) overheat when my 8core is stressed and I don't actively cool them. Mine have no cooling whatsoever, which is a mistake I won't ever make again when buying a board.

Overheating issues often surface when new games with high requirements come out. Older games may not draw that much power to cause overheating, or the fps drops may not be noticeable there.

Nah, jumps from 1600mhz to 3700mhz when the game finishes loading and stays there.

Yes, the game is 32-bit. The requirement for 64-bit Windows stems from it needing more than 2GB of memory, not it being a 64-bit application. The 1.4GB figure you quote is not the full picture as it doesn't include all the memory the game is actually using.

Can you post a DXDiag report so that we can get a clearer picture of which systems are suffering performance issues and which not?

I was ADAMANT the game would have been a 64-bit executable... why the change?

No change; it has never been 64-bit. People just made that assumption based on the requirement for a 64-bit version of Windows, even after we explained that this wasn't the case. ;)

So yeah, I saw someone mentioning that downloading radeonpro, enabling overdrive and setting "always use highest performance clocks while gaming" helps... and it did, atleast somewhat.

Now i'm looking at 20-35 fps in most places, dips to below 20 whenever sitting or standing up from the pilot chair.

Seems like part of the problem is gfx clock fluctuation, though what causes THAT is beyond me.

Shaders normal, vsync off, shadows on, vsaa off, AA 4x (3-5 fps difference between this and 0x), view/effect distance 50, lod 30

32 bit exe, are you serious?

Post by Cdaragorn »

Why on earth would you put out a 32 bit exe on a program that requires a 64 bit OS? You're honestly telling us that you have intentionally added a bottleneck to the game for no reason whatsoever?

Aside from the fact that it can't use all the memory available on the system, it also has to run under emulation. This is ridiculous. What possible good reason could you have for doing this?

Can you please compile this using a 64-bit compiler so we can use the system's native architecture?

Well, technically speaking it's a 64-bit process (EXE) that is running in a 32-bit container (or virtualization). It only spends it's time in 64-bit mode when it is accessing higher MAS. It does a few 64-bit processor feature things but not much. Originally I thought based on a HEX dump that it was running in 64-bit mode for most of it's processing but spent it's mainproc time in 32-bit mode.

I even said that in another post last week. After an Egosoft MOD corrected me I revisited my research. I found that although it was running 64-bit features those were being passed down to the 32-bit process.

If you run task manager, there is a "carrot" next to the X EXE process. When you drop that down you will see it is actually running 2 EXE's the parent EXE which is running 64-bit in a 32-bit container and the child process which is running in the 32-bit container directly. The 64-bit parent is only required for the higher MAS access but it probably does some mapping to hand down to the 32-bit process.
