[Update 1: Driver 331.82] 2 GPUs hybrid sys: GTX 680M and Intel 4k; bugs and feedback

Post by Valaky »

First of all before I start sharing my feedback:
I truly enjoy the gameplay, great job on it, I do have this slight X feeling in it. It just needs a bit of extra polishing and then it would be great!

1)
I'm using a Laptop that has 2 different type of GPUs.
I was amazed by the fact that X Rebirth detected only my onboard Intel GPU, which is total crap but I keep it on in the Device Management because it comes in very handy to preserve a huge amount of battery-life when mobile.

So the fact is even if I change it in the nVidia control panel to use the GTX, the game still only shows the Intel but when I start the game I clearly see the light, indicating that the GTX is active, has turned on. My question is why does the game still mentions the Intel, isn't there support for the GTX 680M? Or isn't there support for Hybrid systems that uses nVidia Optimus technology? You can set system to use the GTX for an application inside the nVidia Control Panel.

Laptop Spec:
GPU: GTX 680M (4Gb Dedicated) and Intel 4000 (Both latest drivers)
CPU: Intel i7-3630QM @2.40Ghz, Turbo-mode: 3.40Ghz (Always on during games)
RAM: 8.00Gb
OP: Windows 8.1

2)
Controls. I'm using a Xbox 360 controller. Propulsing around space is okey ish, but some controls will have to be adjusted. For example in space and on the station. On the station, your look sensitivity is way above the Skunk control ability. The settings that definies the sensitivy, I think you might need to either split it or define if they are only for the station or also for the skunk.
Stick! Menu's are only controlable with the directional (D-pad) pad, make it stick controlled as wel, like any other game does, it is a lot more enjoyable.

3)
Personal: This probably will take a lot more time to do but. Make people move around the skunk entirely. With this I mean, Instead of the button at the door, use the chair. Let people walk around the cockpit, it is a small detail, but might be useful for for example moving a certain menu towards a rear panel in the cockpit room. For now everything is controlled from the cockpit seat which is a must, for quick interaction, I agree, but having a free cockpit will allow you to have different menus extra outside of the cockpit command screen. For example a tactical screen, where you can position your ship like an RTS (but really basic, like Move to, Attack, Trade) with the view of galaxy-map, sector-map. It is just a quicker

4)
Make a skipable landing animation, and put a menu in the settings: "Skip Landing Animation" for people who would don't want it.

5)
I manage to stuck/bug the button to enter the cockpit forcing me from now on to always use the Menu to re-enter the cockpit after I visit my crew when in space.

6)
I manage to stuck the chair animation. The chair remained static and I had the sit animation clipping all through the chair. And when asking the command screen. I had a 100% transparent command screen. I could hear the menu sound but couldn't see anything.

Update 1:
Little update:
Nvidia GeForce Experience popped up a note about a new Driver version: 331.82 If I read correctly it seems to be partially focusing on mobile GPUs, and improve the hybrid utility. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

I have to say I do have a change in performance at the moment.
I have been playing with barely any stuttering, just some minor ones.
Though the game still only detects the onboard one ingame.
But for now the game is a lot more playable with the 331.82 driver.

I have the exact same issue - I have two GPU's on my laptop, an Intel onboard and an Nvida 750M. It can't see my Nvidia, even though I've forced it through the Nvida control panel?

I found this out too.

To all PLAYERS who are getting poor fps performance or crackling sound issues go you the graphics setting in the game menu and check what graphics processor the game is using.

For me, it said Intel HD 4000 and nothing else.

As the OP has said, I went to the nVidia control panel and set X-REBIRTH forced to use nVIDIA graphics.

Now when I check graphics processor in the game menu it says GTX680M
and guess what the game runs fine :-)

To EGOSOFT, I hope you read this thread and realise that during game initiation and load something is missing that would normally find the best graphics processor... and by fixing, perhaps a lot of problems will be solved for the customer base :-)

Remember, most gamers in reality just press the buy button, enter a credit card and expect the game to work not understand how their PC works and faff around with graphic driver setting et al.

Hope this helps lots of people. :-)

Nvidia Optimus is probably at fault, it switches seamlessly when needed but for programs that specifically detect cards only the one that was active when the program was started is detected, which is almost always the Intel. You need to tell the nvidia drivers to switch to the nvidia card when running that exe.

Then you're lucky, because, (as I stated in my first post), the game still doesn't recognize the GTX but it led, which indicates the GTX is active, is on. Now I'm going to try to change a setting towards steam, because ... (see next quote)

... because if it is true that the GPU should be running before the game, and Optimus only initiates the GTX a few milliseconds after the exe initiates.
Then maybe I'll change a settings with Optimus to activate the GTX already when I start steam (Switch Steam exe from Integrated to High Performance), maybe the game will have the GTX mentioned. I'll post an update after I tried it.

EDIT:
Results are negative. The led indicating the GPU is active, turns on, but the game itselfs remains in detecting the Intel.

Question to those who posted in the thread:
When you perform a DxDiag, does it mentions, under Display tab, Intel 4000 or your GTX ?
Also, What do you have in the "Global Settings" Tab in your Nvidia Contron Panel? Auto-select or High-Performance?

for me DXDIAG says Intel HD 4000.

Does that mean that every game I play uses the integrated graphics?
..and somehow I've got away with it having 8GB or RAM and mostly playing strategy games like XCOM.

I'm not very technical, although I do have some appreciation of drivers etc... how do make sure my M17X R4 Alienware always uses the GTX680M graphics?

cheers

Nah, don't worry about every game running on integrated graphics, the Optimus works like a charm on every other games.
Isn't there an indication led that Optimus activated the GTX?

Technically if it is set in the Nvidia Control Panel to
"Automatic: High-Performance" then it will definitily use it the GTX
If you set it yourself on High-Performance it should also use the GTX.

If you're not sure: you can always test it yourself by starting the game ones with the setting set on Integrated and the next one on High-Performance. I did it on another game before because I didn't trust it either but then I noticed the huge difference. But for Rebirth I just wonder why the game mentions Intel and not GTX and if that has any effect "behind the scene", hidden settings that turn on or off depending on the card the game detects.

EDIT: I did a quick check myself with Rebirth.
Integrated is definitily not used in Rebirth if you set the High-Performance in your Nvidia Control Panel.
Just set it there, and it will use the GTX, even if the game isn't showing the GTX

For NVidia Optimus users this video shows how to check if the NVidia application uses the best GPU for X-Rebirth.

Thanks for the video!

I also did an extra research after your post about the video:
There is an option in the Nvidia Control Panel that will tell you the activity of your GPU as well.

Nvidia Control Panel
(On top) Click on "Desktop"
Click on "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area"

Check the Icon if it says:
GPU Activity:
None

Then run the game: Alt-tab to minimize the game and check the icon if it says:
GPU Activity:
1 Program

guys this wont help... if game shows intel then nvidia just help intel if u set it in nvidia panel... there are some optimalizations here.. i had that in Lord of the rings online... nothing helped till i found that in some config files of LOTRO are some adapter settings, and when i changed it i have nvidia card used with dx11..
if game dont recognizes nvidia performance will be low anyway..

Hello Valaky

Thanks for that. I have the Intel stuff in game but looking the GPU activity shows XRebirth works on the NVidia.

Just run GPU-Z in the corner and play the game windowed, you'll see that you're good GPU is being used. I however suffer from terrible performances.

changed to high performance nvidia processor ( in game still shows intel) and have only a little more performance.... then changed in control panel to integrated graphic card and guess what NO BIG DIFFERENCE! try it its a proove .. if you set high perf processor and game show you still intel you MUST wait for a patch because its a optimisation of the game not working.. soo i'll take a break of this game for a while:D

edit: i wonder if there is a command like in linux: optirun or primusrun
XD

I like those new drivers. I don't know how, but on my Fermi card it appears everything is going somewhat smoother than before.
