I'm not going to quote Grouch Marx, but...
If they would have me, they are obviously gonna be on the receiving end of far too many hornets, HEPTs, ion cannons and whatever else will be thrown around in X2 / XOL
I would join if they had absolutely no principles except:
- protecting noobs
- anihilating Teladi

A clan that works together for common goals would be nice.
But I probably won't join one anyway.
Had some rather unfortionate experiences with joining clans(squads) in Jumpgate online.
Complete disorganised chaos.
Squad members going off doing whatever they want. Eg. One paticular member of our squad decided one day to kill everyone in sight (and he was good enough to do so) This caused squads that the rest of never heard of to declare war. One day we had one rival squad the next day I logged on and we were at war with 14 squads, most of which had alliances with eachother, all of which were far larger and more powerful than us. So no one in our squad could survive more than 5mins without being killed by someone we didn't know. The Squad was dissolved.

Tryed playing solo for a while (but solo pilots are the prime targets of pirates)

So I probably won't be joining any guilds/squads in XOU

You know - reputation has a lot of play on how people treat you. I am about the only person that could wander around in JG (US server) without being harrassed with very few exceptions. I started in a non-PvP squad (clan), and somehow (I'm not even sure) became one of the most respected people in JG (so people tell me). I don't fight - I only have one kill since I've started playing (Oct, 25, 2001) - and that was Nov. 2001. Since going solo (August, 2002), I've only been attacked 3 times and only one time was downed (if I had more armor at the start of battle, it would have been a different story).
I hang out with the fighters and hook them up. The reputation gets to be as such that anyone that messes with me tends to have quite a few others messing with them - if I bother metioning it to anyone. I'm proof that you can play a peaceful role, and enjoy peace most of the time. It is the people that hoot-n-holler about being grieved (1 kill = grieved?), that tend to get attacked more.
I've only been in one squad - and left it more because I have always been a loner. I now wander around alone but can call on many friends at any time.
Could others play as I do (peaceful miner/cargo hauler/AI ripper)? Sure - many do. Most are in some of the largest squads in JG, with a few others that are loners like myself. I can't speak to JG - EU as I've never had the privilage to fly there. Maybe someday I will.
No matter how safe you think you should feel - you never are. Expect to be ripped at some time and take it in stride (or run away like I do).
PvP always seems to be the primary point of online games - so there will always be the unspoken challenge in someone's mind, "Do I think I can take him/her/them?"
In the end, I would always want to end up being the loner out in the universe - but joining a clan until I have a reputation that would stand up is a very wise idea. Peaceful, mining, cargo hauling - what more can one want from the universe?
But I do understand that sometimes force is needed to keep the peace.

Don't get me wrong Jumpgate was an excellent game, I played it for nine months (late 2000 - mid 2001 EU server)(the game had only been running a month or so when I joined)HiTekHick wrote:Quite a lot
Fantastic game to begin with. But it just takes one bad apple to spoil a squad. And I seemed to keep picking squads with bad apples

The EU server (at the time) had an awfull lot of pirate activity (not just in unreg spce either) so playing solo was never advisable. Though saying that, there were a few who made a success of it. Unfortionatly I wasn't one of them.
I was still quite happy moving from squad to squad making a living. Until...
All the PK'ing started up. It just got worse and worse. The PK'ers would be banned but they would come back under a different name.
It got so bad that the Mighty Game Mods actualy begged the PK'ers to stop it, but there was nothing they could do, just ban then again only to have to ban them again in a couple of days.
Eventualy PK'ers out-numbered normal players. PK wars going on outside every station. No one of any squad could launch from any station without instantly being shot down. On my final day I was killed 15 times in <3 minutes. I never went back.
Pitty, I really enjoyed it in the beginning.
I hear things have settled down somewhat now. I'm still not going back though. Waiting for X2 / XOU.

I don't know that anything could be done, short of all of us here (and any new recruits) forming one ALMIGHTY anti-PK alliance/agreement of some sort.robroy wrote:Looks like online gaming has a problem regards player killers, isn't there any way around the problem ? i've never played online ever (56k) but when i read about OL gaming it seems to be the reason for games failing, players just get fed up and leave
Something like if PK'ers start to show their faces around XOU we all band together and (own medicine style) PK them right out of the game.
Though would that make us worse than them?
Maybe that's what they are looking for.
Maybe that would keep them coming back for more...
MMMmmmmmm, any ideas anyone?

Going off topic...
Yeah - I have heard that the EU server was much different than the US server. The only thing that is saving the EU server is MG is removing almost everything from the market - so it is fun to fly around just looking to get the best equipment for your ship.
US handled it the opposite way - every station is fully stocked (and then some) so you can get a top-of-the-line ship every time you blow/change one. Super easy to make money too. Guess which way it seems most people want it? Shortages are good.
Getting shot down should mean something other than just plop everything back in your ship and go again.
About PKers - they have always been around - when I first hopped on UO back in '97, I ran into a PKer the first time I wandered around. The question is, how to handle them? - but that is a whole other topic.
