Online Gaming!

Post by JadeNova »

I have never ever tried an online game even though I really wanted to.

You see I live in a third world country and while my service provider is fairly reliable the best connection speed I ever get is 45.6 Kbps. But even when I get a connection like that it sometimes takes forever to download things as the signal seems to come and go.

Now I don't know much about online gaming so I was wondering if there was someone out there bored enough to explain to me how it works and whether or not you can really enjoy it without a cable modem. :)

I ask this because I really want to play XOL.

Wait till you get a chance to get out of country. I know what it's like, Croatia is in pretty much the same situation, sure we have ISDN, even DSL... but it's overrated and costs too much.

Hah! You don't have to live in a third world country to be unable to get anything other than 56k, believe me--I live less than fifteen miles from the centre of the third largest city in the UK and BT won't upgrade my exchange to ADSL until 400 people say they want it. At last check there were 180...

That's BT for you.
Though it is odd you live so near Manchester and don't have ADSL, where I live in a small town in Scotland (<100 miles SW of Edinburgh) and I have it.
The population is only a few thousand, I have no idea how many have broadband, but I only know of 2 others.

best wishes

We have reached the magic number (350) and the upgrade is due in April. :D

No doubt BT will mess something up, but its finally coming.

A campaign was run in the town to get people to sign up. It worked!

So do I just write off the whole idea? :(

I was wondering when you are gaming online does it continually dump huge amounts of new info into your computer? and if so how much are we talking about?

Is online gaming only for people with cable modems? Is it possible to enjoy a good dogfight with a standard modem connection? :?

I've been playing Counterstrike online for about 2 years with a 56k connection and although it does put you at a disadvantage it doesn't stop it being fun (unless you hate losing in which case you should stick to offline in the first place ;) )

I guess the only way to know for sure is to give it a go!

Someone told me that there is a provider in Manila now that uses a little satellite dish. Does anyone know what this is all about :?:

Bridge commander can be fun to play online as long as you limit the number of players to 4.

Yea for a lot of money you can get a satellite connection to the internet which i understand to be nearly instant but very expensive as these things go. I get broadband free :D

You can get this in the UK (even BT offer it), but two way Sat. (send/receive - not just receive) is very expensive and comes with a 750ms ping - forget playing games on it.
