TC and AP will not launch

Both X3 TC and AP have suddenly stopped working on my system. i have verified my game cache on both games and steam reports all is well. please find my dxdiag and event details below.

Event viewer shows this as an application error i have included the event log below. This ONLY happens with TC and AP all other steam games and non steam games work perfectly.

Now so far i have scanned my system for malware - no threats found and i have also performed an SFC scan that also reported no issues.

i have rolled back my system rolled back GFX drivers updated GFX drivers and sound drivers and this still had no effect. is anyone else seeing this issue?

All was working fine a few months back but now they both dont work

AcGenral.DLL is part of the Windows Compatibility Layer.

So it is some sort of Windows problem not necessarily the game.

Have you got XP Compatibility flagged for these games?

no i have no compatability flagged with either game but its only x3 throwing the error other games using compatability are unaffected.

I have searched all over technet for a solution to this and came up short. so i took the plinge and rung microsoft tech support who have had me take ownership of the app patch folder within windows and delete this file - i have replaced it with a known good but still x3 wont launch - same error very odd.

im at a loss here now.

The only other thing I can suggest is to update you Nvidia graphics drivers as they are reasonably old.

EDIT: not old because you are using American date format... my bad...

Update them anyway. Googling that version of driver gives random problems for other games that people fixed by either updating or rolling back the driver

Ok will do that - i have just rolled back from the latest NV drivers as i though that may be the issue but i will give it another go ...

I have just been through my entire games list in steam and every other game launches fine just X TC and AP fails

Ok i have not found the reason for this issue but a restore of my PC through Norton Ghost to the date of my last x3 TC save has solved the issue.

The achilles heel for these games is sound. Windows has a poor history of supporting their own sound modules / constructs which these games use.

The most common cause is a sound codec that fudges things within Windows to get around Windows problems / restrictions (a lot of codecs do this).

If you can, remove any sound codecs that you don't need.

Sound sound cards have been a problem but I think the main one was Xonar. Possibly something by Creative is also known to cause problems, Google through this forum...

Make sure you are only running simple settings on your card, e.g. 2 channel instead of 5.1, etc.

Also try disabling the sound devices completely and see if the games run.

Run a DXDiag now and compare it to the original one you posted. That may give a clue for future reference.

ok further deatils on this,

i have restored my PC from a backup and this has allowed my X programs to run but i have noticed something quite odd.

after the restore i noticed UAC was still enabled - so i went ahead and disabled it and the issue retured giving exactly the same error. If i turn UAC back on all works fine, of course i get the prompt but clicking ok and the apps run as normal.

I never used to have an issue with X games when uac was turned off but i find this quite odd. for now UAC is on and all is working fine - its just annoying.

Does anyone know of any changes to UAC ? i know in Win 8 disableing UAC blocks programs from launching (metro apps ect) but i was unaware this affected win 7 have MS updated it ? who knows but my issue is resolved

That's an interesting one... although I'm not sure why you would want to turn off UAC anyway...

The wiki for UAC has this comment that I think probably explains why you encountered problems (assuming it still holds true of course):

It is possible to turn off UAC while installing software, and reenable it at a later time. However, this is not recommended since, as File & Registry Virtualization is only active when UAC is turned on, user settings and configuration files may be installed to a different place (a system directory rather than a user-specific directory) if UAC is switched off than they would be otherwise.

At least you can now bring your PC back up to date leaving UAC on and the game should run.

Hi, have you only recently installed something that installed all those MainConcept codecs, some of which may cause problems with X3 and Windows Media Player? You may find that UAC is actually stopping unwanted changes in codecs or WMP taking place that could harm X3.
