Cobra crashing into warp gate event horizon regardless of perfect entry - Confirmed.

Post by Stu don't dance »

Ello. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Basically, I have finally gotten to the "fun" part of the game on my first playthrough, which entails me having an M7M with plenty of flails and hammer's to complete some missions. After tooling around long enough to get the hang of the new beastie I decided to tackle the "Treasure Hunt" plot. My first plot. For some weird reason I am bouncing off the event horizon of warp gates and depending on my reaction time, crashing to death. This is a perfect bullseye entry. Not getting close to any of the warp gate borders.

This only seems to be happening on unexplored warp gates. Also, if I pilot through in another craft (or at least my kestrel), I don't crash. I can then go back through xfer to the Cobra and then successfully pilot through (or just jump to the other side).

No idea what this is all about but it is making the last leg of Treasure Hunt EXTREMELY hard as the gate is choked with enemy. Here's the details as the sticky asked for.

I know what you mean as I have noticed it happening now and again (even with explored sectors) when piloting a Brigantine in vanilla X3AP and making a perfectly central and perpendicular gate entry. I had never seen this before in ages of early X3TC and so can only assume that a gate approach or big ship collision envelope difference has crept in for the later game versions.

I do know that letting the AI pilot the big ship through seems safe enough even though it may take a lot longer.

If you have a vanilla save made as the big ship is approaching the gate and upload it to a fileshare site and link it here, then the devs and other players may take a look at it. (Edit: Ninja'd by Terre on this.)

Well, I just plowed through Treasure Hunt using ship switching (I don't think I was supposed to actually kill all the Xenon in that sector but I was very frustrated by that point), so those saves are gone.

Let me see if I can duplicate the circumstances and snag a save file for you guys. Shouldn't be hard.

How would you like that file made available btw? (noob question, sorry)

As Alan said, "upload it to a fileshare site and link it here", just upload it as is, thanks.

Okay, will do. Might be a day or two before I can get to it.

This should be it. If I jump to Nopileos' Memorial south gate and try to go back through it, bam. Every time. Had the same issue trying to get into Bala Gi's Joy through Farnham's Legend and Olmancketslat's Treaty via Brennan's Triumph earlier in the plot. Don't know if they are still glitched. Cobra is the ship exhibiting the collision behavior.

On a side note: I was trying to duplicate this behavior post plotline (treasure hunt) and I couldn't get it to happen again. Through uncharted gates or not. Everything works fine after finishing the Treasure Hunt (so far at least). Don't know if that means anything, just thought you should know.

Yes from that save, jump to Nopileos' Memorial South gate, immediately reverse to go through it and go crunch on the event horizon, every time. If you turn and go forward through it then it is OK but if you now immediately reverse away from the Xenon capitals it is crunch time again. If you turn and exit forward (if you survive the laser fire) then the gate works OK.

I tested some other random gates doing an immediate reverse on arrival and in some case you get 2-3 crunches and then get let through with just some damage. In all cases I checked and the Cobra was quite central, nowhere near the gate rim, and with no following ships to collide with.

It is as if there is a timer that starts running on arrival and with a temporary collison barrier before the gate can be used to exit again - surely not a recent attempt to stop fast player ships unwantedly jumping back on engaging boost too soon after arrival?

It seems that it is the immediate reverse exit on arrival at just about any gate that always crunches but I have also had the event horizon crunch on going forward in a Brigantine in X3AP, it just cannot be reliably reproduced in my case.

On my machine with this save, regarding warp gate event horizon collision: Ship type matters. Under no circumstances can I get the Kestrel to exhibit this problem. Plot matters. After plot completion I do not experience the behavior (40 jumps +). Warp gates don't matter. Charted, uncharted, jumping to gate then travelling through, reversing through, different gate same sector then traversing sector to gate, doesn't matter. The only sure thing is engaging SETA to enter gate, as this has prevented collision for me every time (discovered today). Also, jumping to gate bypasses the issue (jumping to the other side to avoid travelling through), which is why I only noticed it when jumping to uncharted gates and attempting to enter them from the charted side (just incidental to my discovery). Just ran through each of these scenarios back to back so the methodology should be accurate.

Hope it helps.

One bit of shiny news: This bug forced me into completing the plot using a much more sound tactic. Now onto cracking the whip on my marines. I am ready for my first bigship cap.
