Ok, so I've uninstalled nero, got rid of the ffdshow codecs I had (courtesy of the K-Lite codec pack) and I still don't happen to have any audio from Ms.On Board Computer, am I missing something obvious?

Which X3 game?
You have 2 sound devices on the go at the same time, both with outdated audio drivers that cannot have been optimised for Win7 SP1. The ASUS Xonar card has been known to have issues with X3 games and is sometimes difficult to keep up to date. Your onboard RealTek chipset is pretty good with X3 and you can get 2012 drivers for it. With multicore cpus, using onboard sound is not the processing load issue that it was for single core cpus. Disable whichever sound device you do not use in Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices.
The codec list looks good with no obvious problems.

Sorry, forgot this was a mixed forum, I'm playing Terran Conflict myself.
Updated drivers for both of the devices, tried disabling the Xonar whilst using the realtek and vice versa. Neither seems to want to work in terms of voices, it's not a huge deal really so I won't worry about it too much and just play anyway, but thanks for the help, no doubt I'll randomly press something and they'll start working again.

Well, I just verified the gamefiles cache (6.6MB's redownloaded) didn't have any voices on the save game still, but when I started a new game everything started working again.
So I don't suppose there's a fix for save games at all is there?

Possibly not because whatever was wrong with your game installation is most probably also present in the code stored in the saves.
Still try this now that you know the installation is good. Load your latest save without voices, undock and change sector and then dock and save. See if the new gamesave has working voices. Nothing to lose by trying.
