[Fanfic] Kalen 278345

Post by lichking21st »

Well here it is... the story I've wanted to write for a while. I thought to write 5 chapters at first, so I can be sure I'm continuing it, but what the heck, might as well get some public opinion on it. You may recognize there are some warhammer references, that's just because I'm a fan of warhammer, but fear not! It is X fanfiction. ^^

And I swear these chapters look alot bigger on Word. :oops:

And about the name... don't ask xD

Kalen 278345

[ONE]

In the deep darkness of space… no one can hear your screams. There is no sound, no warmth. Utter darkness.

And in the grim darkness of the future… there is only war.

These thoughts were oddly comforting to Kalen, as he headed towards the west jumpgate. In a sector about to be engulfed in war, it was best, he thought, to move to safer grounds. A universe trader, self-proclaimed engineer, and small time fighter pilot, he had no qualms against moving bases.
Sector Patrol scanned his ship on the way out.
An image of the bored pilot appeared on the upper right of the HUD.

“You are clear of any illegal goods and substances, thank you for your cooperation.”

Kalen chucked as the pilot frowned and appeared to be checking his readings before his comms cut off. He wasted no time maneuvering through the jumpgate.

“Best not to give him a chance to think,” thought Kalen.

The sleek black lines of the Terran Sabre emerged from the event horizon. It was a captured ship, from the early days of the ‘Terran Conflict’. He wasted no time personalising his ship, though now tagged with an allied IFF, he did not want some trigger happy sector defence pilot shooting down his ship. Neither did he want vengeful Terrans on his tail in a firefight. After some paint work at the Omicron Lyrae Shipyard, his ship was now abyss blue, which appears black without direct light. He also applied some of his “specialist” work on the ship, turning the old fashioned stick controls into 2 separate touch panels, the one of the left for manoeuvring, the one on the right for strafing. Turret control was integrated into the panels, a second finger on the same screen activating the turrets when safety was disengaged.

Another modification he made was to the shields. During his travels as a universe trader, he acquainted with a great many people; one of his favourites was a Bala Gi researcher. Together they built a new shield system, turning any plasma based weapon into a makeshift plasma shield in addition to the normal shields. While not entirely legalised, he found this gave an edge in spacefights, so he kept quiet about it mostly.

“Entering sector, Nyanas Hideout.”

[TWO]

A lot of Teladi and Argon ships on the grid, doing their usual business. “Whatever that may be.” he thought. Aside from wanting to get to his destination Argon Prime as fast as possible, he wanted to say goodbye to a good friend as well. He checked the list of known persons on the Argon Trading Station, and sure enough, he was there.

+++Connection Established+++

“Markus, how are you?” he greeted the old friend with a smile, Markus’ image appearing on the window HUD as his would be on whatever device his friend would be carrying right now.

“Hey Kalen, been a long while eh? I’ve been getting good income with all this tension around here, the military is scared the Terrans might attack so they increased patrol in the border areas, which means less protection for stations elsewhere… that’s where I come in.”

Kalen could still see the fire in his friend’s eyes, burning as fresh as they were the day he met him. However time wasn’t so kind on his features, he looked a lot more old and worn, but still retaining the sturdy look that marked him out as a combat pilot.

“So how are you doing? Have you finally got a proper name yet?” Markus joked.

Kalen smiled.

“You know I haven’t”, he said. He paused. “Hey, I’m going to go stay in the Argon home sectors for a while… at least until this tension passes, I’m just saying goodbye to an old friend. You know, you should think of sitting this one out as well…”

“What, and miss out on all the fun? I’m still waiting for some real action ever since the last fight at Malestrom… boy were those pirates angry,” said Markus. “I see you got yourself a new ship.”

“Oh, this thing? I got lucky. Some Terran took it out for a cruise alone along the border sectors; god knows what he was doing. Unfortunately some pirates came along and turned it into a firestorm. When I got there to help, he was already dead, and the pirates were gone,” he explained.

“Knowing you, I’d say those pirates were gone only AFTER you fired your turrets,” said Markus with a knowing smile.

“Yeah? Well then you know me too well.”

They both laughed a long while at that.

“Just like old times eh? Listen, I’ll escort you to Two Grand, then you’re on your own. The Split doesn’t really like me after that last mission I did for them,” said Markus. “Hold up, I’ll get my ship ready.”

+++Commlink ended at 1456. Duration 20 mizuras.+++

Kalen reflected on meeting his old friend for a second before resuming his normal thoughts.

Heyas

No gameplay, if it were, it would consist of shooting...shooting.. more shooting... and death. (I'm an assassin in most of my games, I have yet to own more than one factory >.>)

I've always wanted to travel across space... just like in X. This is one way to do it :P.

You might sense my own impatience to get to combat here. I really like the space battles in X3, even if it just consists of either pressing W,S,A or D and holding down the ctrl button xD.

I'm also planning on reintroducing old X technology as something new. I made Kalen an engineer, and a smart one too, just so I could enjoy myself reinventing things. This is going to come as one of my 'surprises' next chapter.... but for now... enjoy :P

[THREE]

The M3 Eclipse moved out of its berth on the station, coming around into view on the main window of Kalen’s Sabre. It looked fairly new, but Kalen knew his friend, and piloted by an experienced combatant, that ship most likely had a surprise or two installed.

+++Connection Established+++

The image of his friend once again appeared on HUD, in slightly higher quality.

“Alright, let’s get moving… hope we get some action before my little escort is over, it’s been too quiet lately…” said Markus

“You know what they say about both hope and saying ‘too quiet’ in space…” warned Kalen in a light but slightly serious tone.

It was surprisingly easy going through the sector, considering how much traffic was around Nyana’s and Markus’ foreshadowing comment, one that put Kalen on edge. Nevertheless, they amused themselves recounting, and in some cases, bragging about some of their recent exploits. It was only when they exited the east gate of Scale Plate Green was Kalen’s alertness awarded, instantly receiving a distress call from a ship in the sector.

“You getting it as well?” Kalen asked his friend.

A quick check of the sector map on the HUD revealed one Mistral Super Freighter and it’s escorts under attack at the south gate. The escort consisted of a battered Skirion Corvette and three Argon Busters. The enemy was, unsurprisingly, Xenon. They seemed to be very annoyed, if AI were capable of showing annoyance, at the convoy. This was expressed in the form of the M6 rival, a Xenon P. The Xenon ship itself had some smaller escorts, one Xenon L and 3 more Xenon Ms.

“Yep, looks like they’re having a bad day”, responded Markus, in too quite joyful tone for the situation Kalen thought. “Let’s go see if we can improve it shall we?.”

“It’s going to be tough, we probably can’t take out that M6, neither of our ships have the firepower to bring down the shields, not to mention the hull”, said Kalen, thinking of possible scenarios that they would escape the fight with both them and the convoy intact.

“You might not, but I do”, said Markus, with a wide grin. “Last time I tried this, it went very well. Just stay behind me and I’ll deploy my ‘special’ package.”

Kalen speculated this was one of those ‘surprises’ that was installed on the Eclipse.

Markus burned his engines at maximum, and Kalen followed just behind, both headed towards the scene.

“Let’s give them a little warning first so they don’t think we’re trying to take advantage of their situation”, said Kalen. Even seasoned pilots could make irrational decisions when pressured. Better safe than sorry.

No response from his friend. He looked to be more interested in the buttons in front of him than what was going through his comms.

He gave a small sigh and raised the Freighter on the comms.

+++Interfacing…. Connection Established+++

“This is the Terran Sabre and the Argon Eclipse, responding to your distress call, we will be there shortly.”

A bright flare of plasma followed, from the Xenon P. It struck the shields of the freighter and it gave away, scoring a glancing blow on the hull.

A strip of red text appeared over the black placeholder for the receiving video from the Freighter.

+++Commlink failure due to unexpected interference. Attempting to re-establish connection+++

He only hoped the message got through.

“Hey I’m gonna need a clear path to that M6, think you can keep the others busy?” said Markus, returning to the comms.

His Eclipse was on a straight intercept course with the Xenon P. Kalen wondered what this ‘surprise’ was.

The Xenon escorts by now had registered them as a threat, and broke off their harassment of the convoy. They were now headed towards the Sabre and the Eclipse.

“Time for one of my own surprises,” thought Kalen, pushing his throttles to maximum, overtaking his friend.
