I assume you are referring to XBTF or Xtension.

Try deselecting 'Use settings' box on start up screen.
Sometimes reinstalling the game works.

Do you have an nVidia graphics card? This problem has been reported with those, and using a different graphics driver seems to be the only fix.

To respond to both the above comments (thank you for them)...

Yes trying to play both X-BTF and X-Tension.... and yes tried all combinations of running them ... on/off combatibility mode + use/dont use settings....

Yes its a GeForce 3 card using the latest Nvidia driver set ..... its an Asus V8200 card but the original cards drivers dont work very well, hence the Nvidia ones .... ill try the original drivers and see if i get any where.

Thank you again for the comments..... :)

What chipset is your motherboard? If Via you might need to install the 4 in 1 drivers. I had a problem a few years ago relating to an original TNT card with driver issues. It turned out to be a combination of the Via 4 in 1 and video drivers. Also, when updating drivers on a nvidea card, you should set the card to standard VGA in display properties, and then remove the old drivers. Not a bad idea to check you windows directory for nvidea driver files. I remove all reference to them in either windows or system directory (old drivers can cause problems). I do the same in the registry. When your video card is set as a standard VGA (or standard VGA PCI) card, you can then install the new drivers.

Yes chipset is VIA and have installed 4 in 1 drivers .....

And yes ... done a clean install of vid drivers by removing all ref to them and deleting the drivers too.

Am still banging my head .........

(Thankyou for the suggestion tho.)

Another tip - just after you have installed the video drivers (ignore reboot prompt), before you reboot, is to reinstall the 4 in 1 drivers again, then reboot.

As a last resort (i've had to do this a couple of times with 98se) you could put a new installation of windows in a different directory. Saves reformatting and you can go back to the old directory, if no joy. Only problem is you have to reinstall your software.

To do this, get out of windows to a real dos prompt (not in a window). Rename the windows folder to something else. I generally rename it to windoze. Reinstall windows from the cd (or .cab files) and tell it to install to c:\windows

Sometimes it's easier to do this than to try and sort out the existing installation.

Direct X 8.1b appears to be the best version at the moment.
Also, the latest drivers might not be the best versions to use, I heard of problems with older cards, etc.
Best to have video card on it's own IRQ
Bios settings: Use AGP as primary card
AGP aperture size?

Isn't windows fun :headbang:
