Steam X3TC Crashes in Game(CTD) - Reducing background apps has helped.

Post by TMC04 »

I've been having the same issue the last couple days.
Been playing TC for a few weeks(I have AP also, but am trying to get through TC 1st) with no problems(Steam versions).
Sometimes it crashes after a few minutes sometimes after an hour. Other times it doesn't kick me to the desktop until I quit the game. What I mean is I click "quit" in the in game menu and it doesn't take me to the new game, options, continue... screen, it just boots me right out of the gome with the x3tc.exe stopped working screen so I have to crtl-alt-del to stop process.
The event viewer shows it being the x3tc.exe.

I have split out your post as the chances are that yours is a different issue to the previous OP's. Please read the first Announcement on this forum and post the necessary information to allow us to help you.

Have you run the Steam verify gamefiles cache tool for X3TC and then restarted the Steam Client?

In event viewer, was x3tc.exe the faulting application and also the faulting module (if not what was)?

Will do when I get home this afternoon(at work).

Yes. Also I backed up my save file and gutted/reinstalled TC & AP(also cleaned registry)

I'll report the event viewer this afternoon, but the 1st crash was a dll issue and everyone after was the x3tc.exe

It started doing this after starting a new 'savage split" game and starting the strong arms mission.

Issues with dlls tend to be drivers or codecs so the DxDiag and error report should really help.

What was the error you mentioned with a dll? I note that you have MainConcept codecs of which one is a known source of CTDs with X3. Can you identify the application or codec pack that loaded them, and do you need them? Even a temporary removal could eliminate them from the investigation.

I notice that your USB sound device has a default generic MicroSoft sound driver. Did the device not come with a brand-named driver on a disc or can you perhaps get one from its support site?

Alan. When I went through the event viewer last night the dll error was not showing up. I must have inadvertently deleted it(hope not). I'll check again today, but it was not there.
I believe the MainConcept codec is linked to my dbpower amp software. I'll unistall it temporarily to see if that helps.

I don't use onboard sound, or a sound card. I use an outboard USB DAC(FA Fubar 2 MK II) in line with a Crack tube amp for headphone duty(I'm an audio enthusiast).

Thanks. Even outboard sound needs a driver of some sort to get the output released in the format it needs, hence the default MS one running. I am just surprised that a quality sound device does not have its own but instead relies on generic ones that it has no control over the selection of.

I'm afraid the error reports and codes have not given us much else to go on so I hope the MainConcept codec elimination proves useful.

That's the beauty of i2s outboard DACs. Bit perfect sound. I can use this on my Win system or my Linux system here at work. 8) No muss, no fuss.

Maybe you can just disable the MS driver in Device Manager then.

I'll give that a shot too.
Also I see a couple threads down that an AV caused an issue for another guy. It just dawned on me that I had a warning from Norton AV that x3tc was using too much disk space(not possible on my comp) so I just shut off the warning.
I'll thumb through Nortons to see if somehow I have TC set to an allotted amount of disk space or just shut the AV off for an X3 session.
I'll post the results.

OK. This may be premature, but I think I figured it out.
I could not find where MainConcept was located even though it was showing up in dxdiag.
Found it in Adobe Element 9. Killed it and so far all is well.<keeps fingers crossed>

The temporary success with MainConcept and now ntdll.dll really indicates a remaining codec issue. Others have had success after this error by uninstalling Haali, Nero and MainConcept codecs.

Run a new DxDiag and look at the list of

------------------
DirectShow Filters
------------------

Look for those names (I guess MainConcept will be the one remaining if any) and, if necessary, deal with them by uninstalling the associated applications.

Thanks Alan.
Could the ntdll error also be indicitive of hardware failure(ie. memory)?

No. That tends to show more as BSODs or CTDs with fairly random critical error codes (and freezes).

I think we are far more likely in codec and maybe driver issue territory with this one - especially if the errors and error messages are consistent.

I still haven't found the issue.
I went so far as uninstalling X3TC and doing some sort of crazy Win7 repair that to me was a huge PITA(more like a complete reinstall, but saved my files). Reinstalled X3TC again and am still having the issue. I guess the good news is I can play the game it's when I go to quit or reload a game that it errors on me. I haven't been kicked out of a game in a while.
This all leads me to believe thats it's either a steam issue or the game itself as all my other games play fine including a down and dirty install of the crossfire/freelancer mod which, as anybody who plays it knows, is a gigantic PITA to even get working.
But... I do love X3TC so as a last resort I am going to let the steam version go and buy a hard copy of X3 and start all over(this will be a labor of love).
