Reporting as advised by Alan Phipps, on previous advice to operate at minimum settings for TC.
Sorry I am experiencimg difficulty including my DXdiag report, previously I have just dropped it on the post from my desktop, this does not seem to be working this time?

Hello David. When you can, give us the DxDiag (copy and paste as text usually works) and an outline of the game DVD version (I guess it is not Steam!), patches used, modification state and the in-game situation and what the issues are.

DXdiag Report.

I visited two years ago about lags, freezes and crashes in Ore Belt doing the Treasure Hunt the one mission took over a month to do. Nearly a year later I had similar problems reporting back to Asteroid Belt between missions for Terran Plot. Both times I was advised to go back to minimum graphics settings and half screen resolution, after you got me to remove Nero DVD program and turn off internet security program, to no avail. As I was experiencing lags and freezes in busy sectors anyway I have stuck to minimum settings since.
Last year I came back here with a sound problem and found that I had to choose speakers or headphones, so I disabled the speaker software.
Finally there was the thread about three screen playing in which I was in awe of these computer systems and you advised that I return here!
The original TC disk was 1.0.1, it has been updated through to 3.2 and Bonus Pack game is still totally vanilla!
I must leave now but will return tomorrow.

OK, from the DxDiag (which I reduced from nearly three copies to one) I can see one ULead mp3 codec which is known bad news with X3 and there are a few others (core... ) that I have not seen before but are probably harmless if you need to use them but could be removed if you do not.

You might be able to get a recent Win7 sound driver from the manufacturer of your onboard sound chipset and then try that device again. I also gather that current advice is that the Logitech USB headsets will use the driver of the onboard sound by preference - rather than use default MS ones such as you have now.

Thanks for the recap of issues. What exactly is the problem now though? There have been several patches over the last 2 years and 3.2 for example greatly reduced cpu load and so improved fps by a wide margin.

Have you tried with higher graphics settings recently? If it makes that much of a difference in fps now compared with lower graphics settings then that would suggest something might be sub-optimum with your graphics card, its set-up or driver and we can explore that further.

The other thing is whether you get those severe fps hits in the relevant sectors after a new start. If you don't then that may suggest that the issue is embedded in your longer-term savegames, which would be unfortunate as there is lttle we can do about that.

Yes I can see the MP3 codec in the report, how do I go about finding it on my computer to remove it?
Is there anything else I should do before trying to increase the graphics settings?
Is there any way in game of getting an fps reading or is it just visual?

Download and run (use 'run as admin') a freeware/shareware tool such as Codec Sniper if you cannot find the built-in codec management tool in Win7 (I am still on Vista so cannot check what it is called myself but you can look in Windows Help). Use the tool to remove unwanted or broken codecs. If you have installed any codec packs (eg k-lite, CCCP, etc) it may be worth uninstalling them as you shouldn't really need them.

Download and run freeware/shareware FRAPS to measure in-game fps.

Did you confirm what issues you were still having in 3.2? Are they present after a new start?

No Alan I have certainly not knowingly installed codec packs, I do not even know what a codec is let alone installed one. The only software I have put on my computer are the programs that came with it, updates for that software and Reunion and TC + upgrades.
How would I go about recognising a 'BROKEN' codec, they sound like a very useless item to have on my computer?
Its a pity you did not know the name of the W. 7 anti-codec program, programs on a computer all look like a load of garbage to me, there will not be one in my AVG internet security program, will there?

The tool (Codec Sniper at least) will tell you if a codec is broken (generally meaning that it is corrupt, or orphaned - meaning unsupported or inappropriate without other codecs, files or applications present). No, an AVG suite is not likely to have such a tool unless it also includes a very good PC health/tuning package.

I think Shootist meant you can use Google to learn a bit about codecs and maybe find the name of the Win7 codec management tool - or you could probably use Win7 MS Windows Help for the latter as I advised.

Oh, and you still haven't described the type of issues your up-to-date patched game is seeing.

Reporting In!

Just giving you a weekly report on progress Alan!
PSU and extra fan fitted by builders are working great, where the previous PSU expelled warm air after three minutes of a Windows screen, the new one is blowing out cool air after hours playing TC!
I have upped graphics settings and screen without mishap so far but I have yet to fly through worst sectors such as Ore Belt or Aldrin. Problem is I am in a bit of a game rut at the moment, training 40 maxed marines!
I am looking for Codec Sniper but have not found it yet, have not done this much Googling for years!
So there we are, hoping to report more progress next week?

David that's good to hear but you do realise that you still haven't told me what your actual problems are now. If you don't have any issues then what are you trying to fix and why?

Codec Sniper example site - first on list. There are many, many other sites where you can get it if you just Google for 'Codec Sniper' (!) but I have no knowledge of the reputability of this particular site.
