FPS Benchmark surprise!

Post by Grimshad »

So I play X3 A LOT and so does a few of my friends. I'm running the latest version of AP(steam version) and so are my friends. Today I got really annoyed by the low FPS in my game, especially scrolling through menus and in the HUD in general. I asked my friend what his FPS was like and he told me it was fine (50-60). This surprised me since my normal FPS is 10-20 when a menu is open and 30-40 when looking at empty space on the lowest settings possible (And I have a beefy rig and my friends don't). So I searched the forums and Google and found people mentioning the same things and noticed that it was supposed to be pretty much fixed via AP 1.1. However, obviously I am still having issues or I wouldn't have been looking it up.

Onto the good bit... I installed another copy of the game in a different directory for a clean fresh install and started up a game to start benchmarking. Here are the things I did and the results:

Common
Cycrows Cheat script installed
Custom start
Added triplex scanner to my ship( to be able to see lots of the sector while flying through it)
Super tuned my ship twice (Aprox 1,333m per second)
Set god mode and no collision for my ship on
Revealed the entire universe
Autopilot docked at the trade station in Cathedral of Xaar (takes EXACTLY 25 minutes to fly there and dock at the station and flys through 21 sectors)
NO SETA IS USED

Benchmarks

Strait Run
Windowed mode
1920x1080
No AA
No ATF
View Distance Medium
Texture Quality High
Shader Quality High
More Dynamic Light Sources Off
Ship Color Variations On

View Run
Added a satellite to every sector (To eliminate the possibility that viewing all the activity in other sectors lowers FPS)
Windowed mode
1920x1080
No AA
No ATF
View Distance Medium
Texture Quality High
Shader Quality High
More Dynamic Light Sources Off
Ship Color Variations On

Max GFX View Run
Added a satellite to every sector (To eliminate the possibility that viewing all the activity in other sectors lowers FPS)
Full Screen
1920x1080
4x AA
16x ATF
View Distance Very High
Texture Quality High
Shader Quality High
More Dynamic Light Sources On
Ship Color Variations On

Added: Max GFX Current save game(for comparison)
Over 100 mods/scripts running
4 days total time played
Windowed mode
1920x1080
4x AA
16x ATF
View Distance Very High
Texture Quality High
Shader Quality High
More Dynamic Light Sources On
Ship Color Variations On

Added: Max GFX with just XRM installed
Windowed mode
1920x1080
4x AA
16x ATF
View Distance Very High
Texture Quality High
Shader Quality High
More Dynamic Light Sources On
Ship Color Variations On

Here are the Results: NOTE: CLICK THE CHART1 BOX AT THE BOTTOM.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... Ww4aUpwRlE

Note: The low FPS single spikes are caused by leaving and entering the sectors and are not gameplay spikes, they were also accompanied by spikes down to 0 (loading), I removed all 0 FPS readings.

Average FPS:
Strait Run: 58.6
View Run: 58.72
Max GFX Run: 58.79
Max GFX Current: 28.6
Max GFX XRM: 32.4

Note: The 60 fps parts of XRM is only when I am looking at and aligning with a jumpgate and there is nothing behind it, fairly close to jumping. Once autopilot is done aligning and starts flying forward the FPS drops again.

So in the end, increasing the GFX actually had better FPS than the lower FPS, although this could be because the higher GFX setting was also done in fullscreen mode which may decrease graphical load.

There were 2 out of the 21 sectors I flew through that decreased FPS at most to 30 FPS.

Either way, it's pretty clear that:
  • The graphic settings do not effect the FPS on high end machines
Having a lot of ships in a lot of different sectors doesn't decrease FPS
Opening up new sectors doesn't decrease FPS
Flying through many sectors doesn't decrease FPS
My specs:
AMD FX-8150 3.6Ghz Octo Core( 8 ) CPU
16G G.Skill 1600Mhz RAM
EVGA GTX 580 Single
Creative X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium (soundcard)
Raid 750MBx2 Cheetas (Only the game is installed on these, OS runs on its own Cheetas

Important Note: I run a Tri-Monitor setup, 2 26" monitors that I use for programming and 1 46" monitor I use for gaming, ALL 3 monitor were connected and running the entire time these benchmarks were done, fullscreen and windowed mode, This may have an effect on the outcome of the FPS results, I don't know..

In conclusion, I have to assume my FPS problems with my current savegame are either
1. As has been suggested in the past, the longer you play, the lower your FPS gets.
2. I am running TONS of mods/scripts and they are causing my FPS problem.

EDIT: It looks like XRM is one of the huge FPS problems on my end.

I plan on doing more prolonged tests to see if that the longer you play thing really makes a difference.

Anyone have any suggestions on other things I can or you want me to test out while benchmarking to see how it effects the game?

Cheers.

Yep, register your game then PM any moderator so that this can be moved to Tech Support where it belongs. :)

Edit: Unlocked and moved. Thanks for registering!

As I told CBJ, I am not asking for technical support, I am only providing useful information for X3 players, I wanted this in the general discussion forum, but CBJ insisted it be moved.

I would like to reiterate that I am not posting about an issue, nor am I helping solve one. I am just sharing my personal FPS benchmarks with the community.

Still, it would be very useful for comparison purposes to see what your DXDIAG report looks like. That's actually a very critical part of comparing benchmarks, since there could be a number of issues with a machine that only the report will show. However, if all you want to do is compare system benchmarks and not understand why you're getting them, then maybe this whole thread belongs in the Off-Topic forum, where non-support hardware issues should be discussed. CBJ is correct, though, this kind of topic does not belong in the main forum.

EDIT: after more thought, I'm moving this to the Off-Topic forum. The Tech Support forum is for requesting tech support for the vanilla game. Discussing benchmarks using scripts and mods is best done in OT. So over it goes.

If you insist: I will put it in this post so it doesn't make the OP any more spammy.

This may sound counter-intuitive, and don't ask me why it happens, but sometimes a new high-spec computer will perform worse with low settings. I did have it explained to me once, about 9 months ago, when I turned down my settings in LotRO (normally at max) to do a raid and my fps dropped to single digits, but I don't remember how it works. My PC has lower spec's than yours but I have everything except ATF at max (ATF is 8x) and only ever get an fps hit while doing large-scale combat missions in a place like Aladna Hill when the enemy is Khaak (especially Corvettes). I can even sit in 10x SETA for long periods of time doing stuff in the menus without noticing a difference in performance.

Of course, I don't have 100+ scripts running or a 46" monitor...

I highly doubt the size of the monitor is going to affect the performance. What I was getting at was that all 3 of my monitors are running while I am playing the game, which I believe could reduce performance since my GPU needs to output 3 separate video signals at once.

I will do a benchmark in Aladna Hill with some Kha'ak combat and post it for you.
