Newbie panic: Do I need scripts to fully enjoy the game?

Post by Harry Tuttle »

I understand some scripts are official. Please would someone tell me how and where to find them?

Also, I read a performance-related thread a little while back stating that scripts may harm performance. Is this true?

I am extremely excited about the possibility of tweaking this game beyond it's current, buggy and unpolished state nearer to the vision it promises. All, any and even some advice on where to begin in the Big New World of Scripts (to someone who has only just learned of the concept!!) would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks for reading. Hope you can help me.

There are a few scripts I couldn't play w/o:
latest xai trader mk1.1a (I think) - very nice, I've noticed no performance hit.
xai jumpdrive commands - this only runs when called, so shouldn't be a performance issue either.
and of course, my economy mod v0.1, *shameless plug*
after having used them, i really couldn't play the game w/o them now.

The only official script IIRC is trade extension mk3, you can download it from your personal downloads page off egosoft's home page.
The rest are avail on www.xscripting.com as well as other places.
My latest stuff is always in my signature.
Xai stuff I usually get from their website www.error691.com/Xai

Note that I definitely run others as well. These are the just the ones I feel add the most 'needed' changes. (although I'm pretty excited about lv's work on his khaak spawner)

As 1.3 is hopefully coming soon, you might sit tight for a bit though. It's possible that quite a few scripts will change post 1.3.
Hope this helps

Cheers buddy. Hanging out for 1.3 before I really get stuck in with all this.

I'm a bit disappointed to discover than inhabited sectors are so small (relatively speaking). This severely shrinks my 'big universe/go anywhere' impression of the game. :(

hi there :)

i was a bit diaaspointed too, that the universe was so small
i thought there would be about 5times more sectors than they are now :)

well to the actual question...
i don't think you need scripts to really enjoy playing
but i'm sure it can really be fun with them :D
in fact i started trying scripting bour 2 days ago, in fact to change some ship setting in the TShips.txt
and since i few hours i really figured out to change some things ;)

well the only thing which might could be one of the negative points of scripting is, that it makes you kinda addcited and bit megalomaniac ^^

i think when i'm finished with that split M6, i'll have kinda allrounder, able to carry any weapon, stations, and with a hispeed engine (500+)

(omg..)

(btw sorry for the "strange" english, i'm used to type in german ;) )

oh my ;) isn't that a bit of an overkill?
then again I admit I tend to love my "blow all enemies in sector" script if they happen to anoy me while fiddling on a new script ;)

they are here on the egosoft page in the d/l section.
For one it's just now - the MK3 trader but I'm sure more will come.

if they are done bad - yes.
Shouldn't happen with the official patches though.

well scripts can help - but they are definetely not required to make the game fun. I guess we even gotta be careful not to overdo it ;) if we make everything too good and automated, we're left over with a game that plays itself ;)
I think the danger of actually running a non-profit business are far too low as is. Hmm might have helped if not only SPP & Mines - efficiency would depend on the sector you build in.....
