Hello,
I'd like to report a codecs related issue about the X:Albion Prelude (seems that it include other X titles, too).
I'm using for that test Windows 7 N/K Ultimate - it does NOT include windows media player by default thus WMA/WMV codecs are not available. As a result instead of voice playback I'm hearing a short noise (binary stream sent directly to the sound card?).
Partial solution: Install windows media player for your version of windows (KB968211 for Windows 7 N/K).
Desired solution: X:Albion Prelude should check for the required codecs and warn user if not found.
Regards
adderek
P.S.
I have experienced similar problem with music playback (noise instead of music) on various versions of Win XP and Win 7 - although I have not checked it the cause seems to be a wrong MP3 codec used for decoding by the game engine/system. The mp3 files could be played without any problems in any audio player.
No ingame voice messages (or rather noise instead of voice)

Unfortunately due to the limitations of the DirectShow interface used by the game, and the antics of certain codec authors who deliberately write their codecs in such a way that the game has no way to tell them apart from the ones the game wants to use, there is nothing more that the game can do to force Windows to use the correct codecs.
The issue with Windows N not having those codecs is a known one, but I'm not sure that it's even possible for the game to tell that they are not present with the information it has available to it. The solution you have found, installing WMP (or at least the codecs for it) is the correct one.
If you provide us with a DXDiag report, as requested in the very first thread in this forum, then perhaps we could see which codecs might be "stealing" the output, and advise you how to correct the problem.
