Beam weapons in X2.

Post by ElectricMonk »

I was thinking about the beam weapons that X2 will incorporate and how they compare to the beam weapons used in B5 and FS2. So below are a few questions:

Will these weapons sweep across firing arcs to track a target, and if they do, will they pulse on and off as they track, or will they fire for longer periods of time?

What type of beam weapons will there be? We've seen a few anti-fighter beam weapons in the trailer, but will there be bigger beam weapons mounted aboard larger vessels for large-scale space battles involving capital ships?

What types of ships will be able to mount beam weapons? Obviously the smaller ships won't mount these weapons, but will the new corvette-sized ships be able to use them?

And finally, will all races be able to use beam weapons?

In the X2 vid you see a small Khaak fighter or pyramid shape thingy coming towards you just before it dissapears off the lower left side of the screen it fires it's weapon which is a thin green beam 8)

Mmmm...not sure about beam weapons.
In other games I have always found them to be pretty useless, except against very large, slow and Boronly stupid targets.
Sure ES will do a better job
Just give a bigger, faster, meaner hornet and I'll be a happy, dead pilot again

The beam weapon in Xtension seemed to be fairly reliable against fast moving targets.

I suspect the beam weapons in X2 will operate similarly to the lasertower in XT, although in reality we'll just have to wait see really

Forgot that. Lasertowers are surprisingly effective. A few of those mounted on Perseus would do the trick.
As you say, it's a wait and see. Still, the more options the better.

What do you mean by "beam weapons"??

D'ya mean like phasers? or like blasters? (I'd call the blaster, and BTF and XT style, weapon a plasma thingy, not beam.)

Just curious. So we'd have blaster-type, beam, and projectile and missile? funkay! :)

I've also assumed we are talking phaser style - a continuous beam rather than a "single shot" every time you fire.
Can be tricky to keep locked on, but more concentrated damage.
Will be interesting judging when to take your finger off the trigger if trying to capture.

I'm getting old - had forgotten all about I-War.
Those beams were cool, if you were a good enough pilot to get close without getting shot to nothingness (I generally wasn't)

Try it with Assault LDA's with synchroniser and booster upgrades.

(And meson Particle filters just in case)

You DID know that you can switch lasertowers to use beam cannon instead of normal GHEPT rounds in X-Tension, didn't you?

Slow but deadly would be my hope.
