Can player ship be upgraded to a capital ship?

Post by Donsja »

This must be one of the most important questions about XR imo, will i be able to modify my ship to become a carrier?

I mean, not just being able to deploy drones, which sounds abit boring if thats all it can do. I want to be able to launch fighters and see my capital ship duke it out from the window in my bridge, where i at the same time sitting on the commanding chair driking coffee :D

I really dont hope this is gonna turn out to be like Darkstar One http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DarkStar_One All the info i have come across seems to lead towards a "clone" of that. Just with the difference that you can command other ships.

Drakstar One sucked. It became all so repetitive after a while. I too hope Rebirth gonna be different from that.

Aww, of course it will.
It's going to be Darkstar Two. =P

I don't know why y'all have a problem with DSO. It was a great game! The developers said so themselves!
Granted, it only had one sector with the asteroid (copy/pasted about 30 times with different names) but that didn't matter! The enemies were always spawned in proportion to your ship's upgrades so it would have been pointless to hand-craft sectors or encounters when they were going to be auto-generated anyway!
My complete script download page. . . . . . I AM THE LAW!
There is no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

You wont be able to make your ship a carrier, possibly the equivelent of a small M7 in x3tc. But you will be able to land on carriers you buy and watch the fireworks with your hired captain commanding :) (who you give orders)
I used to list PC parts here, but "the best" will suffice!

Hmm i hope they will show a video of this, as i dont really know what to expect.
I do however like that i dont directly control the fighters. It was ALOT of work in the other x series. Not to mention suiciding fighters and bombers

But DRONES... ive never really liked drones in x series, and when i think about it, i think of a small white boring dot who pew pew and dies with no feel of consequence.

Still not being able to fly any ship i want, makes me feel they removed alot of the freedom i used to have.

And i dont really want to fly a small ship with "drones" for my entire play time, i must be a capital (carrier) pilot. Its in my SOUL!!!

With the info i know right now, its a no buy sadly. Hopefully it will change as we get more info.

you can fly nearly any ship you want. anything below carrier/destroyer/TL size and it will be the same as exterior camera view in x3 i expect, only difference is you wont die with that ship. + yes you will most likely need to have the pride of albion in that sector also.

Which sounds incredibly boring in it's own right.

From a 'single pilot in the universe' point of view, makes no sense. From the 'fleet commander' point of view, it makes perfect sense.

To the OP, I do not think it can be upgraded into a carrier. Apparently, all capital ships in the game will be slow and sluggish and be controlled by the system. Depending on how good the AI is, how configurable are the ships, and how complex are the combat tactics, this can be either really good, or really bad.

We have to wait for more info to see how it will turn out.

Just where do you get that idea? The most Bernd or any other dev has said is that you can remote pilot the various drones. Nowhere did they say that you can take over other ships with your VR helmet. In fact, Bernd explicitly said you cannot directly control any capital ship. He also said you can only manually fly just the player ship. So no, I don't think you can fly anything else, either remotely or in person, and I'll continue to believe that until you or someone else can quote a dev to the contrary. :P

In response here is a listing of my ideas and also the reasoning behind the one ship.

I have been thinking about this topic quite a bit and it really does make sense now that i have spent a few days looking through all of the viable information. Here is what i think and my opinions on this matter.

only one player ship: depending on the AI this really is a great thing to bring back with the addition of more drones and more drone capability you really only need one type of ship.

Drones: From what i am able to speculate there probably is going to be alot of drones now in the game which for this makes them very good for the following reasons: one they are cheaper. 2 you can produce them in your factory most likely. 3 they most likely replace all fighters as well so you have M3 - M5 this also is inline from what i have been seeing on the Capship portion. also with this setup it might even be possible to connect to one of your stations in another solar system and vr controlling your drones. this in itself would be very invaluable.

Capships. the first thing i need to say there would be nothing stopping you from landing on one of your Capship and having it fly around while you control your empire. Capships most likely will have its own drones and quite possibly be able to store much more of them.

last and not least stations: stations have expanded to much more then was ever possible. not only would you have armed stations according to the information but also was stated you could produce everything from one station in a true way. this leads to making your own ships drones and so forth but it also leads to something else. Possible true sector control with your stations and with the possibility of controlling your drones from vr while your in another part of the deep space while landed on your Capship this in itself would lead to instant control of the situation even Out of sector situations.

I personally am truly excited with the many possibilities that I've been able to determine from the available videos and information so far.

yes i was bummed out not being able to fly my own Capship but i have completely reconsidered. this one ship deal isn't all that bad in fact if the AI of the copilot hopefully is worth something this would be truly a strategic and ever expanding possibilities in all the new uses that is possible.

Also from what it looks like the skunk most likely would be a Corvette. which is perfect anyway not to big not to small with the make up the drones a perfect start. and with the ability to land on Capships really works out well.

Here is my thoughts and opinions I am not here to inflame anyone just hope people think about the new possibilities and not just the negatives.

I'm not sure why you think that's a response to my reply to dougeye's quote. I see nothing in your cut-and-pasted old post that pertains to flying other ships with a VR helmet.

Although I have no proof... It is my belief that drones will not be the drones of old. I think they will still have the small tiny drones but I think drones will also be as big as old M3's... Like I said I have no proof but that is what I assume.

The point is with the game setup, there really is no need to fly other ships with the way rebirth looks to be setup.

Hmm. As I understood it, there was going to be one really detailed ship (your ship), and the rest would be usable but without all the extras. It's not easy designing a unique cockpit interface and internal design for every single thing in the game, after all. This would allow for one great ship and a smaller selection of more generic interfaces.

The "not dying" part is a nice side bonus. There are plenty of ways for ships both large and small to die in uncomfortable and aggravating ways. In fact, the corvette class (X3:TC, at least) hits the sweet spot between combat-sturdy, reliable-escape, and collision-safe. It's the ideal ship type for a long player life expectancy.

If the player ship can dock with capital ships (like a captain's yacht), then direct cap control may be possible. I just don't think it'd be very fun, considering the scale and complexity of caps they're aiming for! It's simply too much for one man to handle. But there's always the nice benefit of having the best escape pod in the galaxy.

Still expendable, Still (I assume) the same as most other combat drones, Still a get out jail free card (remote controlled, big bang bang no die die)

I like the feeling of ejecting out of my Shrike, in my favourite fighter, my favourite because I have tried many others, but I like THIS one, in the knowledge that, if I have underestimated my foe, if I screw it up, I (quite rightly as has been used throughout the history of gaming) go back to last save, spending the time it takes to reload pondering my mistake and planning on how to remedy it next time around...

Maybe it may be sitting back and letting the Drones do the work.
I wonder what format the menu will take ?
What shortcuts ?
TS Drone ?
M3 Drone ?

This is how those of us how have spent hundreds of hours in game learned how to be good. It was also how i managed to learn how to take down an M6 is my kestral :D. Without the need to every really be in danger of dying (drones), you wont be forced to learn from stupid mistakes that cost you your life.

I don't think drones will be expendable bits of cargo like in X2 and X3. You'll probably still end up reloading if one dies (at least earlier in the game), because it's going to hurt a lot more like losing an M3.

Except in X3 your life only costs 3,000 credits. Not very valuable.

I'm really amazed about some ppl experiences on previous X games...

...I have seen it repeated on some places "drones and dying removes consequences"...

...Erm, and saving and loading?... How much was the cost of a "salvage insurance"?

What's the difference between loosing a drone and reloading after a death... A lengthy loading bar? I can easily "live" without that, thanks...

...I trade off a "thousand" manual ejections for a single drone that dies because there is no way in hell a player can use it to make content trivial.

"Learning to fly on X's"... WTH... There was nothing to learn... But strafing and to know which enemy ships "cheated" their way to victory by using "instant" weapons... That took what? Like 5 minutes?

Regarding the "freedom to pilot anything"... Really? Or there were 2 or 3 ships in total that were the killers when performance mattered against "non strafeable" enemies?

Piloting preatty-looking pixels is not what matters on a lengthy game... That grows old a few minutes after you acquire that particular set of pixels... It's what you can do and achieve what matters... And that can be done by offering millions of slightly altered static "packs" (ie the different ships on previous X's) or by giving the players a single ship they can "cook" to adapt for his/her tastes... I already done the former and want to see how far we can go on the later.
