Is it? I never considered it a style, more a marketing idea - Civ V had one, and I am sure many other games have too- Some games though, I am sure, do not lend themselves to a demo.

Given that the release date is somewhere in 2012, I can say with a good degree of confidence that, no, the demo is not ready yet.

X2 had demos and FPS Test (kinda a video demo which tested yer PC)

X3 had FTP Test ... can't remember playable demo tho, but was playing it as soon as it came out anyway.

I'll be happy with a simple benchmark demo such as the x3tc one. My computer isn't superpowered by any means and I want to know if I can run the game with acceptable framerates. Also I have a no demo, no purchase policy and that still applies even if it is a new game in the series that I love.

A Benchmark Demo was already confirmed on a german online portal (*klick*).

Zum Schluss verspricht uns Bernd Lehan, dass man in guter alter Tradition auch für X Rebirth wieder einen Rolling-Demo-Benchmark anbieten will.

I'm pretty sure I brought X-Beyond the Frontier because I had played a demo and loved it so as this is supposed to be a brand new game aimed at a brand new audience I suspect it will have a playable demo.

If it doesn't and they end up getting less people buying it as a result then I think the term epic fail may well apply as well as something along the lines of OMG golden opportunity missed or what?

You mean XR in 2012? On the gamepage it says 2011

Me to but it can't be helped, at least this way it doesn't have to try and compete with the AAA titles being release towards the end of this year. Who knows, if they release it at the right time they can get more interest in the game, which means more money for them, which increases the likelihood of some sort of multi-player.

Its not that they don't want to its that they don't think the addition of multi-player would add enough sales to return the cost of the effort of adding it in the first place (as its not easy to add into a game like the X games). Meaning adding the feature would loss them money, and Egosoft isn't exactly the biggest game developer and probably can't afford the loss.
