Soundcard issue

Post by Winter Dragon »

I'm in a bit of a bind,

The machine I use which has the modem in (My own PC is fine but has no modem yet) has a Crystal PnP soundcard.

The first sound that the card has to process ends up looping an infinite number of times.

Ie. I open a folder and it makes a little 'tick' sound, then it goes 'ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti' forever! :(

I cannot stop it. The other error I get is when it doesn't do the inifite looping sound, it just won't play any audio. "Playback failure. The device is currently in use by windows" or similar.

I never liked this soundcard anyway.

I had the same problem when I had a cheap Crystal sound card. You can either install tonnes of different drivers for it from www.driverguide.com or the driver CD (registration is free, blah, blah, blah) or follow in my footsteps and buy another sound card. I did manage to use the card for some time after installing different drivers from the CD, although my one was a bit of a bitch and in the end I just lost my patience with the damn thing and shelled out £18 for an SB PCI 128, a card I have used for two years and probably will never replace (but that's only because I'm not a fan of twenty-speaker, three subwoofer, deafen-the-neighbours sound systems).

If, however, you want to use the card, right click on my computer, look under the device manager tab and see if windows has anything to say about it (although I'm willing to bet it won't). Install different drivers, and if that doesn't work, play with the BIOS, pray to God, look at the microsoft website to see if this is a documented problem then buy a new card.

£10 says PJK says something a little more helpful :)

Then it is as I had thought. :( It did ok, bought it in 1999 for $23NZ (8-9 pounds) and for my own machine I got a Soundblaster Live! Value. Have had that for over 2 years and it's not given me problems yet. :)

This machine does need a new card. I'll try pick one up second hand. And as for this crystal. I'll document a series of images showing it being smashed with a hammer. :)

I always wanted to do that... not that I'm a violent sort. :D
