Persius Mission & UFO thingy??

Post by rusty »

Doing the Persius mission at the moment but having major problems capturing the ship, is it possible or do u just get to destroy it :? Also When I was looking for the ship i came across an extremely fast moving UFO type ship with very weak shields, Anyone have any idea what that little beasty is all about. :? :?

Hope someone can shed some light.

Yes the Perseus can be captured, best to save first. Can take a while but much worth the wait although it won't have the 125MW shields.

You have seen the UFO. Have you heard the noise it makes. Came from behind me the first time, wondered what it was. I think it's just an in game bit of fun. Don't destroy it or your ratings with the Goners will drop.

It is possible to capture the Perseus, who has 125 MW shields which it will lose after capture and revert back to 25 MW shields. It takes sometimes up to 15 minutes to get its shields down to a "capture" level. You can use wingmen to lower the Perseus shields faster (Mambas are ideal) and call them off when you give it the final shots. The secret is to stay close to the Perseus's tail when it will fly in a straight line. If you stay too far behind, the Perseus will turn back on you.

Use saves you buy from the Goner Temple, so you can save in space and save often.

The UFO is a gag of the programmers and does not serve any purpose in XT.

I put up the perseus's info page on while i was capturing it, watch the shield level, when it gets to about 2% lay of a bit just to be safe. That is actually one of the easyest parts of the mission. For the next part(hornets, hornets, hornets).
The ufos take down your status with the goners some times but I did it once and it gave every thing a stat boost.
Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games

To capture the Perseus stay between 50 and 150m from it, keep it the right way up and aim slightly below the centre of the ship. Make each shot count. Fire one shot at a time using both lasers, once you get closer try firing 2 shots then when you get to abuot 80m you should be able to hit it with prolonged bursts. If your aim goes off stop firing and re-aim.

If you get really stuck then give me a shout and I'll capture it for you.

I am going to be no help, because I have never been able to capture the Perseus
However, a couple of words of warning just in case your game behaves like mine:
- however close I stay, the bugger always seems to turn around and start taking evasive and attacking action once its shields get to about 50%. In the end it settles down again, but its crafty little ship and getting behind it can get oh so frustrating
- I've found that after a series of attempts to capture it (loading up the game again and again at the right point) the Persesu does the dirty on me and its shields suddenly go to zero and it blows up - they disappear mysteriously when the shield level is at about 30-40%

It could be a bug, or it could be a special programmers gift for those of us that are just too damn pathetic pilots to capture it in a decent number of attempts

If you get closer than about 40m the you will experience the evasive manovering. As long as you remain between about 50m and 280m it will continue to fly in a straight line.

Its not easy but just keep at it and you will get there in the end.

I'm gonna go back and try again (although my trading empire is already built)
If I don't capture it, I shall hold the forum responsible for broken joystick, screen, chewed tongue :headbang: ...
My useless flying will of course have nothing to do with it whatsoever

Also best to have freight transporter and spare shields in the shuttle, so as to transfer shields to the Perseus on capture. Ship can still be attacked by race fighters and Melissa if you are not careful. :)

That's one of the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me
Seriously, thanks Al, I will let you know as I have been itching to fly it for far too long now.

Not a problem. I've captured it for a lot of people on the forum now and to be honest I enjoy the challenge :D

Just let me know if you require my services and we can arrange transfer of the save game.

Just a thought. Do you have salvage insurance that you get from the Goners which allows you to save the game in-flight? This can be invaluable when trying to capture it as you can save the game each time you make a good dent in its shield level.

Yep, I've got loads of salvage insurance.

I think it might also be my joystick - a Wingman which is hammered and needs replacing. The Xperimental handles like a bloody boat compared to the Perseus. If I lose it, I never get behind it.

As a matter of interest, how many Mambas do you need to try that tactic?
I've tried with 4 Mambas and they just don't make a dent.

I'm gonna try again tonight - it's going to be a long haul with wine and ciggies methinks :D

Mambas? Real men do it solo :D

Al

PS I think those who have used wingmen generally used 2.

It's one hell of a lot easier since I changed my gamepad from a M$ Sidewinder to a Logitech wingman cordless. Got a throttle on it as well, that makes a big difference. Also the shuttle doesn't bounce around as much when firing the lasers. The only problem with it is that it goes to sleep if not used for about 30 seconds.

I'll try it again like a real man then :D

P.S. Apologies to Rusty for hijacking the post. Hope it's helpful for you too

That's only because you are jealous.

Using the keyboard for throttle control was a nightmare. It was difficult to get the speed right. :(
