Memory Question

Post by Captain Kremen »

Does anybody know if Win 98 will work with 768Mb of memory
as I have just become the owner of a knackerd PC with 512 DDR PC2700 in it which will add to my 256 2700 DDR I have in my own machine
I was going to install win 2000 pro next time my machine screws up as it has been 18 months since I last installed win 98 se -and 2 years is about all you can hope for untill 98 fills itself so full of junk files that it gives itself an electronic heart attack
God Bless Microsoft (Swiftly and Mightilly hopefully soon :roll: )
I know NT4 and 2000 will definitly work with this but I am usure about 98

I'd answer that question if it wasn't written in green, on a (to me) blue background.....

As far as I know, Win 98 only has memory issues over 1gb.

should be ok, no problem, unless the motherboard is an old one & restricted to 512Mb or similar

Well Ive put it in (the 512Mb of memory) and its working so far - given it a few good memory thrashing tests and it seems to be stable
Tried 3d mark 2001SE and to my surprise it has increased its average score from 5900 to 6350 if that means anything in the real world

By the Way was the server problem due to this malicious virus / worm that has taken down many severs today including my local computer shop SCAN & most of South Korea???

Should have seen the queues at SCAN today there usually bad but they were half way around the car park when I arrived today (For people who know Scan it takes them long enough to serve as it is I thought I was going to have to get my sleeping bag out today) Anyway thanks for the help chaps and chapesses

You might want to check this out;

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;253912

If you have MaxFileCache set to a sensible value in System.ini then you will be OK;

Some memory management utilities like Cacheman will make this setting for you, so it may have already been done. But you should check anyway because your system could suddenly become very unstable without the MaxFileCache setting.
