Automated repair facility progress.

Post by _nox_ »

So, here's what I have so far.

I was able to make a new factory that produces 'construction equipment' which is the dummy resource I am using. It takes ore and power.

Every so often the factory will look at the first damaged ship in the list and perform 'n' points of repair in exchange for one unit of construction equipment.

It's slower, but it's automated.

I'm also thinking - that I can make a script that runs in the repair yard that will perform an 'interrupt script' that will make any damaged ships in the sector fly to the repair yard for repairs - after the ship is repaired the script can release the repaired ship to go back to previous orders. That's something for later though.

Current issues :
* having a lot of trouble getting a 'shipyard' of any sort to 'need' items such that ships will deliver them and the factory will stock them.
* capships are not properly docking at 'scrapyards'

I wanted to use an argon scrap yard for this but, something is wrong with the model and capships behave very badly when you tell them to dock at it.

Very interesting and creative approach there, _nox_. I particularly like the construction equipment being produced and used - needing resources. It would be *nice* to be able to put mini drydocks closer to home, or wherever.

People keen on capturing ships might also value stations like this. If the cost of repairs is low enough and they aren't in a hurry, fixing ships before selling or using them might be really attractive.
(#?)Ore + (#?)e-cells --> (#?)construction equipment --> 'n'(#?) hull repair... and at what rate of repair?
Are you thinking of just matching shipyard costs, or possibly allowing a return on investment?

I don't think anyone has yet come up with an alternative to race shipyard repair services. I've also read about difficulties getting large ships to dock properly at new station types based on those that allow it. :headbang:

Have you considered modifying a factory that needs resources, or does that kill the repair option? Even being able to repair docked M3, M4, M5, TS, TP, IS and GO would be remarkable.
As a semi-professional programmer, my advice would be... If you get this working for non-cap ships , stop! I believe you will have accomplished something unique - and people will applaud and want to try it.
After that, :headbang: as much as your head can stand. You can always release a second version of your work later, right? :)

Good luck with this! I'd really like to see what you come up with.

so far none of the stations that dock capital ships permit proper setting of demand that is obeyed or stocked or allow construction to be set on.

I have a construction materials plant working, however.

I'd rather not modify the data files, since there's no way to merge them if someone else mods the game.
