Controls Problem

Something weird has been happening with my game for quite a while, it wasn't too bad before since only one or two controls were being affected, but now I just cant use any of the keys because pressing for example the escape key for a fraction of a second will make the menu open and close 10 times. Most of the keys, including the arrow keys are auto-repeating like mad now making navigating menus impossible. The first control on which this happened was an extra side button on my sidewinder mouse, which was used for switching missiles, it is hard to switch to the missile I want when it goes through the list twice before I can let go of the button. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am currently using version 2.0 and the problem is still present.
