Speech missing, all other sound fine, and I'm stumped

Let me start by saying I don't have ffdshow or Nero, never have on this system, and all my drivers are bang up to date (this is a rig I use for competition gaming, so I keep it in tip top shape).

I've re-downloading Windows Media Player 11, and my only other media player is VLC, which shouldn't interfere with X3TC's codec selection process, and am using the latest English version (Steam keeps it up to date). Edit to add: no mods or scripts download, completely fresh game install.

The problem is this: Speech is completely missing from the game. When docked at a station, I hear the radio static you normally hear before the station welcomes you aboard, then there's just silence. Same occurs when receiving storyline messages, communicating with other ships, etc. I had this problem on a previous install but I found out it was running in 7.1 mode when I had a 5.1 setup. Now, my 5.1 setup is gone (haven't used with this system since a recent format) and everything's set to Stereo.

Any help would be appreciated :)
(side note, I really wish the spoiler tag worked like I've seen it on other forums where it's a button you have to click and the text gets added to what's on screen instead of a big wall of invisible text)

Try disabling the HDMI sound output on your graphics card. You almost certainly aren't using it as you don't have proper drivers installed for it, just the default ones that come with Vista. Also check the in-game speech volume setting, and check that you have all the voice files installed correctly - 00044.dat and 00144.dat in the mov folder for the English language version.

Disabled the HDMI, took a look in the folder and found 00144.dat, and 00044.pck, not 00044.dat. Did a 'Verify Integrity' check in Steam and it's currently downloading something so fingers crossed.

Update: Finished the download, still no voices or 00044.dat.

Did you check the in-game setting for speech volume?

Can't see any likely suspects remaining in your dxdiag, although suspicion has to be that it's a codec problem. If there are any codecs on your system that you don't definitely need, try removing them.

If your MB has onboard sound, you could also try removing your sound card, enabling the onboard, and seeing if it helped. (ensure you update the drivers for the onboard if you did this.)

In-game volume's fine, tried both disabling the sound on my BIOS (the state it's in at the moment) and using my card, and removing the card and using the build-in, no joy either way.

I've not put in any codecs apart from what got installed when I installed vista. Might try throwing in ffdshow just to stir things up a bit, might get a crackle, hiss, or pop to give me hope

Uninstall the game, clean the registry of settings for TC, and reinstall? Just thinking maybe there's a bad setting there somewhere...

Hi there. Is there an option on your audio card that looks like "karaoke"? If there is one, try tampering with it. I've got such an option on the Realtek app, checked it (or unchecked it, don't quite remember) and lost all the voice in X3TC. If there is not, good luck! :roll:

In that case, use the Steam option to back up the game files, delete the game files, clean the registry entires and then restore from backup - this will prevent you needing to do a full download.
  • Right-click on the game and hit "Backup game files".
    The Steam client will open a backup wizard
    • Check that X:TC is ticked, and only X:TC. Click Next
    • Steam will suggest saving to "Program Files\Steam\backups". I prefer to browse my way to a place in "My Documents" - it's easier to find again later.
      Note down the Disk space required!
      Click on Next
    • Steam will prompt for a backup file name, and demand a filesize. There are three options - CD size (assumes you will be copying to CD), DVD size, and custom. I suggest you choose custom and enter the diskspace figure you noted down in the last step, unless you want to burn the backup to CD or DVD. (This isn't piracy or breaking the copy protection, as you can't use the backup without a steam client, and an account which "owns" the rights to TC.)
      Click Next.
    • The game will backup.
  • Right-click on the game and hit "Delete local content".
  • Clean the registry of TC-related entries.
  • Navigate your way to the backup, and then wind your way down through the folders until you see a file called "steambackup.exe". This is the actual backup. Run it and it will reinstall TC.
*IF* there has been an update since you backed up, Steam will start burning bandwidth. Otherwise it will check file integrity and download any broken files, which is probably none.
