need help understanding modding

Hi everyone i am new here but anyway on to my problem.

I am interested in learning about modding the x2 game but I know pretty much nothing about it. I have seen all the ships people have created and put into the game and that is all I really want to do myself but I don’t know were to get the tools to do this. I have seen the mod kit on the bonus downloads but I have no idea how to use it.

So can anyone out there help a newbie :)

well doubleshadow has brought many usefull tools with are nescesary to mod. (X2-Mod manager and X2-Editor)
further you need a Modeling Programm as GMax or 3dSMax (there are more, but thesse two are the only ones compatible with doubleshadows DBox -> export the models to a x2-useable form.

So I'd say, get gmax (it's free, jou just need to register - Turbosquid) and create your model. I'd recomend you to get the turtorial that is offered there - it helped me a lot!
As soon as you have your model I could help you for the further steps or you could just look for one of the many turtorials that are on the forum.
