2 OS questions
Question 1: Are there any Linux distros out there that will run X3TC? Also, if there are any, will they do so without Candega?
Question 2: Will this game work reasonably well on Windows 7 Beta, or can it be made to? I've been wanting to put that on my desktop for some time. I've worked with 7 beta on my laptop for awhile, but my laptop lacks the cajones to benchmark this game on.
System Specs:
Pentium 4 HT 2.8 GHz, overclocked to 3.12 GHz
3GB Dual Channel DDR2 RAM with ECC
BFG 512 Mb Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT, factory overclocked
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
Current OS: Win XP Home
Board: Intel D925XCV
Thanks.

1. I doubt it. See 2 below.
2. Not at the moment because the copy protection does not yet support Windows 7. The TAGES people are working on driver certification and it will be very likely to be working well before the final retail release of Windows 7 (though it will probably remain unsupported until then).

Yeah. I have the UK DVD. I'm in the US. Actually, I figured out a semi-workaround, by getting the Vista TAGES driver straight from their site. This got around the driver the was installed from the DVD being shut down by Windows, but then it started bugging me to insert the original DVD. Blehhh.
Ahh well. Guess I have to work with XP a bit longer till TAGES makes a fix.

It is not a question of a specific distro but if that distro can install the needed software, such as cedega or wine.
Wine is the free version and can be installed via repo. Instructions can be found on the Wine-HQ site.
From the Wine-HQ site it seems that, with some modifications, 2.5 will run with wine version 1.1.17.

The Tages Driver on their website has been updated to a BETA version that works on the Public Beta of Windows 7 build 7000. However because it is a Beta Driver it doesnt work on every system.

Oh, yeah.
Must have been the question that threw me for a loop.
Just checked and the only entry for X3TC is from Jan2009 and it (TC v 1.4) did not seem to be working back then because of the Tages Copy Protection.
Maybe it can be configured with admin privs (or there will be a fix for it in the future).
I know that the copy protection was also an issue with X3TT, but I knew it was removed in one of the 2.x releases and the only reason I got X3TT.

Regarding Linux distros.
Fedora comes directly with wine included and I managed to run most of the games on it pretty nice actually (I actually was playing WoW under it quite a lot).
But the problem with the game itself is the Tages protection (which requires the drivers to be installed) - this is the reason why I am pretty sure the >original< game won't run on Linux / Wine / Cedega.
The old X3 (after they removed the copy protection ran OK - if I remember correctly). So you will have to wait until they remove the copy protection in X3:TC aswell to try - or will you?
cheers,
meh
