Pondering: Game req

Post by Rawh »

Greetings,

The box of the game says that the minimum requirements of the game requires a Pentium IV or eq. AMD processor with 2.0 Ghz.
The recommended requirements indicate that the game can also run on an Intel Core 2 duo.

My question regarding the above:
Will X3TC be able to use dualcores to the fullest or has that just been put on the box so the lesser-computer-expert people understand it also runs on their system?

I've just ordered a new pc. I'm quite anxious to start to play on it.
The new pc has a "Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8400" and I wonder how the game will run on it :)

next to that I wonder why it got moved to Off-topic.
Imho the question is well within the limits of being of technical use, thus the reason for me posting it there....?

I have a dual core system also and I would like to know this same thing.

...and I also would like to know why this is in the off topic forum.

Because its about the system for X3 and not X3 itself I would expect.

Because the Tech Support board is for getting tech support, not fairly random ponderings on tech issues. The game engine is not written for multiple cores and hence will not make dirtect use of more than one core.

Because the sticky thread on System Requirements specifically asks you not to post this kind of question there.

It doesn't work like that ;) No X3 doesn't both cores of a C2D, but other software will while X3 is running.

Also it sounds like you're comparing two different generation CPUs at the same clock speed. Taking a 2.0ghz P4 and a 2.0ghz C2D and comparing the P4 to a single core of the C2D, regardless of the fact they have the same clock speed, will yield significantly different results.

It wasn't really a comparison. I just looked at the requirements for the game and raised an eyebrow when I read about single and dual core.

I kinda feel a bit stupid now for disregarding 2 of the most common things:
- Search the forum first before asking
- Ignoring sticky content

Thanks for the answers nonetheless!

the game can use between 1.3 and 1.6 cores by my reckoning (the game is coded in one thread but the directx dlls run in their own threads) plus, of course, other system tasks can run on the other core

I'ts all good. You in the right place now. Just be careful in off topic. We've had peeps trapped here, never to be seen again on the other part of the forum.
