Kazaa/Kazaalite.....beware, there are dragons

Post by Scarecrow »

For anybody using the Kazaa system....look out!

There is a trojan lurking there that damn near destroyed my hard drives.

Attaches itself to IE, .exe files and God knows what else! Got into my backup hd as well.

Lost everything.......including 69 days of continous X-Tension

My Empire is gone!

It was detected Dec 30.......to new for AVG to detect.

I'm still rebuilding.

You're SURE it's a trojan, not an actual virus?

I gave my computer some Pc-illin Backed up eveything no Os related file onto ther sever. Delteted Windows, then re-installed it then backed eveything back onto my computer  I went almost a week without a compuer :(

There is a post on the forum warning about it .(a little late!)

AVG has caught the 2 virii that I managed to pickup, but couldn't see this thing at all. Niether did the on-line scanner from the PC-cillin site.

I'm assuming the post was right.

What ever it is, it's brutal. Managed to send itself to my brother. He was thrilled.

It's gone now........along with all the screenies, forum artwork, and numerous progs that now all need to be reloaded.

So don't you have to open any file or attachment to get this one? Is there a cure? I use AVG and hope I don't get it...

Or is it just to do with this kaazaa thing?

hotmail has quite an effective Virus protection, if the AntiVirus on Hotmail picks up a virus, you wont be able to d/l the attachment ;)

as for my virus protection, i use McAfee - i did use AVG, and to be honest i was appalled, it never stopped anything and i ended up having to format

At the risk of getting flames to death I cant say that I have much sympathy for people who get infected while swapping what are effectively illegal copies of files. Perhaps if you were to buy the albums/software etc that you are getting infected from then you wouldn't get shafted by some malicious little virus. Sympathy for email infection yes, by Kazaa and the likes no a chance.

If nothing else I bet this livens the forum up a little!

No, you'd just get shafted by some malicious little record company....[ external image ]

(For your info I feel that games software is reasonably priced so don't fear Egosoft, I'll be buying - one for me, one for Thrangar!) [ external image ]

I just find it extremely strange that people are very defensive of X when it comes to copying it/ripping it off, but at the same time have no problem doing it to other software/music etc.

Don't bloody believe it re Hotmail, it should detect viruses in attachment which it sometimes does not. I forwarded a few mails recently from my Hotmail box to my private one, my IPs virus scan detected them which Hotmail did not.

So I d/loaded them from Hotmail onto my hard disk and run AVG through the mails to. Sure enough, they were detected by my AVG. So much for Hotmail's ravings re save mails. The same goes for attachments which are infected, Hotmails virus program NEVER tells you this is a virus, at least it did not tell me.

You alone can place safeguards on your PC, I have 2 anti virus programs running in the background all the time plus "The Cleaner" (an anti trojan program) active too, call me paranoid but it saved my bacon several times in the past.

Cheers
