Bad, and regular, stuttering problem

Post by Idunyken »

Yo!

I know there is already a stuttering thread or six but what I get has a twist to it...

My game alternates between running extremely well and 1 frame per second...

The regularity of the problem is the wierd thing; I timed it and it seems to be changing between the two every 55 seconds...constantly :? IE the game runs smoothly for 55 seconds then runs at 1fps for 55 seconds. Furthermore If I pause the game the cycle continues...if I pause at the start of a good cycle and wait 55 seconds i'll come out to a bad cycle

It doesn't change no matter what's on the screen or in the sector...I can enter and fight in pretty big battles with cap ships smoothly when it's on the 'up cycle' and this does not apparently change the '55 second rule'

Running: X3 TC 1.4 (this issue occured in 1.3 as well)

My comp:
64-bit Vista home premium SP1
Intel 2 core quad cpu 2.4GHz
4GB RAM
Dual Nvidia GF 8600 GTS
Partrige in a pear tree ^_^

The type of behaviour you describe strongly suggests that the problem is caused by something outside the game; the fact that it happens when the game is paused makes this even more likely.

Check your process list and see what's running in the background. Pay particular attention to anything that might access the internet or anything that performs a regular monitoring task such as a printer monitor. Also check your CPU usage graph in Task Manager and see whether the performance dips are matched by spikes in CPU usage.

ok, I started the game in windowed mode so I could have task manager on screen. Here's what I found:

1) Forget the 55 second thing...while I was doing this test I timed with a stopwatch and found the times to vary from 1 min 30 secs to 1 min 50 secs.
2) Periods of normal operation lasted slightly less time than periods of stuttering :(
3) When the stuttering starts the CPU usage rises dramatically from about 27% average to between 40 and 60% (fluctuates a lot).
4) Sometimes when I start the game this problem doesn't start for 10 minutes or so, sometimes it starts within about 1 min 30-50 seconds :( I checked a few times and this apparently has nothing to do with what I do in-game.

Another curious feature I just noticed: This occurs on the main menu as well! The difference tho is that the period of normal operation lasts for about 10 minutes while periods of stuttering remain at about 1 min 50 secs.

About the processes, I don't know what ones I should be ending...if I show you a screenshot of the list could you tell me?

On a quad core machine any CPU usage level above about 30-40% while in-game is pretty much guaranteed to imply that there's something else grabbing processor time, as the game itself is single-threaded and can't therefore use more than one core. Even taking into account 100% of one core for the game and a generous combined 50% of another core for background processes and drivers, that still couldn't get you anywhere near 60% total across all four cores.

In the main menu the game is doing very little processing indeed beyond that needed to render the menu scene, so performance should be pretty steady. Again, this pretty much guarantees that whatever is causing this lies outside the game, unless you can identify something in that menu that is on-screen while performance is poor but not while it's good.

You're welcome to post a process list. I may not be able to help you identify which processes could be causing the problem, but someone might. I'd also suggest a thorough anti-virus and general malware scan to make sure there's not something nasty lurking on your PC.

Additionally, the process list in task manager also displays CPU usage (or at least I hope it does in vista,) so it would be worth keeping that on screen while you test - it should be fairly easy to identify the process(es) causing a spike in CPU usage.

Good call Eladan!

When I watch the process list when this occurs it's...a bit crazy...

Basically several processes from the svchost.exe and rundll32.exe files to a drag-to-disk application start taking up small percentages of CPU time (1-5%) for a brief moment and then return to using 0%...this causes CPU usage to vary wildly and so many processes are doing it that I can't easily identify all of them... :S In normal operation all of these processes take up 0% CPU time. Additionally any active windows including X3, firefox (normally not open or in the process list when i'm playing X3) and task manager itself start taking up considerably more CPU for brief moments. I saw task manager take up 12% at one point (normally 1%) and X3 rise to 36% from the 25% it takes normally (that shouldn't be possible right?) :?

Only one seems to stay using CPU almost all the time that the stuttering is happening and 0% when it's not happening: "audiodg.exe" It uses about 2-6% CPU. I found this blog about it:

http://blogs.msdn.com/larryosterman/arc ... g-exe.aspx

Dunno if that is significant or not, here's a few screenshots of the task window while stuttering is occuring:

1 - what I see most of the time
2 - one of the extreme examples!
3 - with firefox open

Another site I checked suggested I also run a program that monitors DPC latency (explanation at the bottom of the program's site here: clicky)

In normal operation the graph is full of small green lines of <100us, here is what it looks like during stuttering: "Sending data now" screenie

Virus and adware scanners came up with nothing but cookies...That's all the info i've been able to gather with my limited knowledge of computing :S "have I provided something of interest?" :P

Shameless double post!

I've not had any luck fixing this so far but I remembered something that might be important...often when I access My Documents windows explorer will hang for a long time before succesfully loading. Does X3 regularly access my docs and could this be happening to it?

Windows Search Indexer is running, meaning - each time a process creates a file, Vista will index it, stealing process.

You could also try killing the 'audiodg.exe' process in the task manager, along with, 'jusched.exe' java update, once its' looked for any update - during the boot process, you can kill it, personally I don't allow it to install itself, or remove it by force if forget.

I would not have a browser open during play, as it can check for page updates and refresh.

If you have the 'Roxio suite' installed, could try to live without it, just to see if or how much it effects you system.

I've tried killing all those processes including java, roxio and audiodg.exe. No effect  Firefox is not normally open when I play so it's not the cause.

I also tried killing Mcafee antivirus and I think it might have made it worse...slowdowns lasting 2 mins 30 secs now with only 40 seconds of normal operation...

How do I turn off Windows Search Indexer? If that doesn't work then i'll reinstall X3. If THAT doesn't fix it it's possible I've got a more serious issue with the hard drive... :(

I do not have access to a Vista machine so I used Google and came up with:

1. Click Start > Control Panel
2. Go to Click System and Maintenance
3. In Control Panel Home view, click Administrative Tools
4. Double-click Service (If asked for permission just continue)
5. Find “Windows Search” in the list
6. Right click and hit Properties
7. Click Stop
8. Select Disable from the drop-down next to Startup Type
9. Click Apply and OK

I hope that works; but nothing is guaranteed in the world of windows.

Turning that off didn't help, and neither did reinstalling...installed from disk, didn't apply any patches, started a new game and it still happens with no drop in severity...

Completely stumped :?

Worked out what it was, I just hadn't cleaned out my casing in ages and dust had covered the CPU fan intake...it was pushing 90 degrees celcius when X3 was running!

Lesson learned: Basic computer maintenance is not to be overlooked...

and to further improve it, you might want to try the SmartClose 1.1, that shuts down every useless programs. And you can add .exes to the list that wont be shut down. Preferably run it in administrator mode. Remember to add your AV and FWall programs to it.
