If you purchased a duplex or triplex scanner it is automatically installed and put to use. They only manifest themselves in the form of extended range and nothing more.

Others like mineral, bioscanner, or freight scanners require you to right click on a target and choose the scan option. However the bioscanner is passive I believe and is used in conjunction with the freight scanner.

The duplex scanner just doubles the white circle on the sector map within which you can see ships. The triplex scanner gives you triple the range.

Freight scanners and mineral scanners give you the scan option when you're close enough (<4km for ships, <10km for asteroids)

Also, under game options, you sould be able to find a list of all the keys available for quck-targeting features of your targeting radar like 'Target nearest Enemy' and so on.... this is most useful to know. These can also be assigned to joystick control which is great. The duplex / triplex scanners simply increase the range of your radar.

Other scanners like the Mineral Scanner and the Freight Scanner: you have to be in range - 10 km for Mineral, closer for Freight (not sure - about 2 km?). in either case the object to be scanned needs to be targeted, then press the i key (i for info). With the mineral scanner you can tell the ship to scan asteroids automatically in the 'special' commands section... (X3R). To scan any object not appearing in your sector map ie: non-mapped asteroids, it has to be done manually - you have to personally approach it and scan it.

Same goes for targeting individual stations in complexes - they do not appear on the sector map - just the hub - so you have to point your ship at the individual station, press t to target it and then you can get info on it.

Are the duplex and triplex scanners cumulative?

Once I get a triplex should I sell my duplex?

They are not cummulative, but you can't sell a ship extension, just transfer is to another of your ships or throw it away. It does not occupy any space anyways.
