Giving up and asking for help...

Post by Arakiel »

I've tried tuning the graphics settings, I've tried looking for newer drivers for my hardware, I've even tried being patient and waiting for patches. Yet with 1.3 I am still seeing really poor performance from Terran Conflict. X3R+XTM runs smooth as glass but X3TC gets the jaggies REALLY bad.

Some of the worst are when the whole game locks up for about 5 seconds and the UI seems to "reset" itself (i.e vanishes and reappears). Or while fighting, if capital ships are present firing off flak it becomes an extreme exercise in frustration and almost impossible to play with all the stuttering. Even without cap ships, any sudden movement on my part (like turning around quickly) is almost certain to cause stuttering.

Last night while in Legend's End/Home/Whatever I tried flying through the gate on SETA...I went right through it without jumping. Now this has happened before so I wasn't terribly surprised just annoyed...but for kicks I tried going through with SETA again...and again...and again...6 times I tried and still failed, finally I lost my curiosity and just crawled through without SETA on and jumped, only to have it happen again when I was in heading to Aladna Hill.

Sigh...here's the DXdiag, any help would be appreciated. I spent good money on TC and want to play it but X3R+XTM is less frustrating at this point.

i afraid i can't help you on the stuttering and stuff since i'm not too technical, but just wanted to coment on the SETA thing...

I had the same 'problem' and found an anwser somewhere on the forum, no link sorry long time ago, but anyways it's seams its because of the engine not reacting in time, to your hitting of the gates barrier/event horrison/whatever,...

this is caused by the rate at wich the engine calculates movement and stuff, if you manage to move though and beyound the 'hitbox' of the gate in a single 'update/cycle' it will simply put you on the otther side without ever hitting it... from the sound of it back then it did not seam like something that was really considered a bug and certenly not something that could find an easy fix, since it would basicly require many more cycles than used now, which is limited by the CPU...

it should however never happen on autopilot (even in SETA) and only in fast ships, not sure I think its when your speed SETA included exceeds 2000*...

*not sure of the real number but its around that atleast for me...

this is why it will happen almost repetedly when the right conditions are met...

Aye, I understand the reason for it. The collision detection can't detect the hit because I've moved beyond the bounding object between frames. Basically to me it's just another indicator that my frame rate was in the pits and staying there while I was in that system. What I don't get is hy my frame rate is so terribly bad.

Can't see any obvious issues in your dxdiag. Unfortunately, it looks like Egosoft had limited success with 1.3 - there are a number of people reporting improvements, but some others are reporting performance is unchanged or worse. I guess the issue is a complex one...

I think it would be a positive proactive gesture on behalf of the dev team to at least acknowledge that the issue is being treated, and perhaps have an estimate of when we may expect news. That would be enough, at least as far as I'm concerned, to keep me interested in the game.

The game is playable as it is...

I think there's more than one issue here. I've certainly found a speedup with 1.3 so I think processing performance has been improved, but in busy sectors the game seems to be maxing out the system limit for 32-bit processes (2 gig)*. The game then has to constantly throw out and re-load resources and basically juggle them around.

the "solution" - make the game use less memory - has the assumption that the game is "wasting" memory (rather than needing it for some functionality or other) so may not be viable :(

*Yes I know you can mod the exe to be LAA and set the /3gb switch if running a 32-bit OS, but for a start setting LAA could very easily cause subtle bugs in the code, and telling users to edit their boot options is not a viable solution to the problem

I agree with Cahu, a word about the issue is good customer service, silence just breeds irritated players. Especially where they insist you post a DXdiag up if you want any help (and god help you if you don't post one) and then are met with silence. If I was the only one with this problem I could accept that I had some wonky setup that no one can figure out but I'm most assuredly NOT the only one with the problem.

Considering how uppity Egosoft gets when you DONT post a DXDiag I would think they would make a special point of looking into posts that DO post one...

I've been asking for some kind of update for quite some time and nothing has been forthcoming. However, Eladan made a good point in another thread:
eladan wrote:You won't see many posts from the devs, as their job is to fix bugs, not answer forum posts. While you may disagree, it's simply a waste of time to post in every thread "this is being looked into". And yes, I say every thread, as invariably if someone's thread is missed, they will take it as clear evidence that their particular issue isn't being addressed, and it would be very hard to argue against it.
While this may be true, it doesn't make the complete silence any easier to bear when you're suffering from such a frustrating issue (I have similar too). If the Devs are busy fixing bugs shouldn't there be some line of communication between them and the Mods though? How do these bugs reach the Devs in the first place? If they read the forums then the occasional reply wouldn't kill them. If they don't read the forums then someone must be passing the issues back to them (Mods?), in which case couldn't that line of communication be used to glean some tiny amount of info back our way? ...or there's secret option 3, which the Devs don't get any of this info - I really hope that's not the case.

Oh, one last thing - eladan, if you're reading this.... this looks to me like yet more people complaining about performance :P I think the issue is FAR from resolved. Please also note the title of this thread "Giving up and asking for help..." - I told you people have reached the point that they're simply giving up. At least Arakiel posted something. I think many don't anymore. :(

Cheers!

I'm reading it.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that I think it's not an issue. I haven't said that anywhere. I realise there are people with issues, and I'm sympathetic of the troubles they are having.

Fair enough. I just have way too much time on my hands now that I'm on holiday and can't play X3:TC due to these issues! :P

The dev's don't need to post in every thread that it is being looked into, they only need to post it once or twice and the community would usually take over and post a link to the dev response...stickies also work nicely, I've heard rumors that's the kind of thing they are for.

For my part, I haven't found any posts where someone with "Egosoft" in the profile has said "Yes we are looking into this terrible problem, please be patient and we will have a fix soon/next year/never too bad sucker"

For now, I am managing...despite all odds, to enjoy the game by simply avoiding situations where I know the performance is going to be bad...which means certain systems like Legend's End are off limits and any fight where cap ships are involved and likely to fire off flak in also a no no. While it let's me play, sort of, it's hardly a viable long term solution.

The problem is, that while this may quiet people down in the short term, all too soon you'd start getting people demanding an update, asking what's taking so long, saying it can't be THAT hard to find the problem, etc. etc.

It may seem unfair to not be told what is happening, but it simply isn't productive for Egosoft to do so. If everyone were able to treat any news as exactly that, and didn't try to turn hints into promises, or read more into what was being said than actually was, then I suspect the situation would be different. Unfortunately, human nature intervenes.
