CTD at a specific game time
I have a CTD occuring at a specific game time.
I have been playing X3:TC for about 2 weeks now, and have the same scripts installed since day one. Never had a crash or bug related issue before - except a drop in performance when having over 100 hostiles in sector which I believe is being looked at.
It happens at Game Day 4 - Hour 09:10. It doesn't happen at exactly the same Game Time Minute, it happens however as many times as I have tried at 09:10+/- 5 game minutes.
I have patched to the latest patch before starting this game.
I am using scripts (only scripts though, not mods) and I know that they may cause such behaviour, however I have tried uninstalling all of them, having all my ships dock and do nothing, and SETAing or patiently waiting to the Game Time in question and I still get a CTD like clockwork, pun intended. I also have not setup any factories yet.
I would have posted my dxdiag (I have ffdshow disabled as instructed in the sticky thread) but due to change of ISPs I am without internet for the next week or so. By the way, could the lack of an internet connection be the cause of this ?
I know that the use of scripts in the game prevents any serious attempt of technical support for this, but does anyone have any idea of how I can track down the culprit ? I do believe it's an action taken by the game since it does happen at a specific moment (ie an NPC ship docking or GOD setting up a factory), but I have not found anyway to get any debug output from the game.
Scripts I am using (in case someone is interested)
MARS
Cheat collection plugin
Cycrow's community plugin
Wing command hotkeys
Salvage claim soft. Mk1
Deploy satelites in target sector
Sector scanner

Only the steam version requires internet access, and that's only for initial activation or regular steam startup stuff when not playing offline, so an in-game CTD won't be due to lack of net connection.
Even removing the scripts has the likelihood that the save game will have bits left over - you really need to start a new game after removing scripts to be sure that you've got a clean game. I know that's not very helpful when you're looking at a potential issue when you're four days in...
People will be willing to give suggestions for things to try if you can find a way to post your dxdiag, but there's not much which can be suggested until you do. One thing to try if you have the steam install is to verify your install to ensure that it's patched up to date and all files are present.

If possible, could you please send the savegame to owen@egosoft.com
Thanks
Thanks
Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games

@eladan
It's the DVD install, not the steam one. I understand what you are saying, and I did take into consideration all consequences about scripts before installing them, but I have a "gut feeling" it doesn't have to do anything with them.
Anyways, I am pretty sure I would have to start a new game when the 1.3 patch is out, so no major problem with this.
@Xenon_Slayer
I will ASAP. That is, tomorrow about this time (have to go home, copy the savegame, go to work, email).
I very much thank you both for your prompt replies.

Yesterday, after some further testing I think I have narrowed in on the culprit. My savegame starts in Paranid Prime at about Day 4, 08:40. I found out about the problem because I took a mission there which caused me to stay IS until about the time of the occurence. In my initial tries to reproduce the CTD, I also flew west to the Emperor Mines, where I also had a CTD at said time. That led me to believe that this has nothing to do with the actual sector I am in.
Yesterday however, I found out that I can avoid the CTD by jumping to a sector other than the two mentioned above - Paranid Prime and Emperor Mines. It is even more interesting that some times I get a CTD as soon as I jump back in Paranid Prime even after the normal CTD time, ie at 09:25. On other occasions I don't get a CTD and am able to continue the game. While in either of Paranid Prime or Emperor Mines the CTD always occurs at 09:10+/-5 minutes. I believe the culprit is or are some the Argon ships that jump from Emperor Mines to Paranid Prime looking for a fight at about that time. It is just a hunch, I had not enough time to pinpoint the actual perpetrator, though without any debug info from the game that might not be possible anyways. Today I am going to launch a preemptive strike on ships (cheat plugin destruction, nothing fancy) that are about to go through the Paranid Prime - Emperor Mines gate and see if I can avoid the CTD that way.
Also I did some testing, then applied the 1.3 patch, then unstinsalled and reinstalled and applied the patch - results were the same and the CTD reproducible with any combination, so I doubt this is patch related.
Of course, I could be totaly off the mark, however I mention it because it's a valid theory and it took me quite a bit of tests to narrow down on it. If it is a ship jumping from one sector to another that is causing this, I think we've stumbled on something rather important bugwise.
@Xenon_Slayer: I am trying to send you the email you requested now but gmail seems to have a bit of hard time handling a 11,2MB attachment. I hope it makes it through

Yay, emails sent finally. I can't believe how tedious it still is in year 2008-9 to send an attachement of 11,7MB
I also remembered I brought my DxDiag with me. Here it is for reference

If Xenon_Slayer has asked for the save, it sounds like he might have a suspicion as to the nature of the problem. However, in the meantime, we can help to optimise your system.
I'm not an expert at interpreting dxdiags, and yours looks reasonable to my eye. The only thing I've noticed is that you have ffdshow installed, which can cause issues. Check the sticky on how to stop it interfering with TC (unless you've already done it.)

Yes, already have exclude X3's .exe from ffdshow's list. I also read on a thread that using directx hardware acceleration for directsound might cause issuess so i've tried with it both at no acceleration and full acceleration setting but had the same results.eladan wrote:If Xenon_Slayer has asked for the save, it sounds like he might have a suspicion as to the nature of the problem. Now that I've found that I can "bypass" the CTD, and my savegame works with 1.3 I am quite at ease. Loosing four and a half days worth of gaming when you are a 33-year-old veterinary surgeon with your own practice is a definite slap in the face timewise, hehe.
However, I am very interested in what might cause behaviour like this and I hope Xenon_Slayer pinpoints the problem. Because, frankly, bugs, shortcomings and all, I find X3:TC otherwise amazingly stable for a game with such a grand scope and modability.
--
On an other note (hijacking my own thread), I wasn't paying attention the first time I installed the game - was mostly on the phone, but apart from taking about 1 full hour to install (same on a friend's machine as she informed me), the installation was pretty smooth and I could browse with no problem while the game was installing. I am talking just for the installation of the game, X3 runs really really smooth otherwise.
Yesterday however after installing the 1.3 patch, and uninstalling the game, the re-installation took about 2+ hours, while the system was definately not responsive (even notification sounds were choppy), CPU usage from the installer was nearly 0% as well, and I have nothing else running on that setup, even AV software was turned off - being a Linux user, my windows serves only for an occasional game session and this is a fresh install anyway.
I can only blame the copy protection software for this (and as I said I have nothing else requiring copy protection atm) that got "upgraded" with the 1.3 patch. Maybe you should take a look at this with your copy protection associate.
Things are generally simple.

Well, it's been a couple of hours and no "failed delivery" email came back so I guess it got delivered. I will try the rapidshare approach if Xenon_Slayer tells me he never got the emails.TheElf wrote:Not sure if the savegame got through but you can also try to upload it to rapidshare or something like this.
