http://www.apexf1.com/x3/TC/mods/TBackgrounds.rar from fud
Performance enhancer or not, would intelligent races really want to build a hyperspace hub in an area where nobody can see more than five feet infront of them? I know I would rather move the gates OUT of the bloody nebula.
Anyway this is the one I use, it works well.
Also, I'm not sure that its listed under the "mods" on the community sticky or not...should be next to "no rocks" and such
[Edit] No its not there I dont think:
No Civilians by Graxter
No Floating Icons by Graxster
No Suns by Graxter
Remove Rocks from Universe by Graxster
...is all I see.

In most games this is the case, but I'm not so sure in X3TC. I seem to lag a whole lot more in sectors with fog.amirite wrote:Fog is actually a performance enhancer just so you know, and installing one of those mods will probably get you an FPS decrease.
I also remember reading a post somewhere stating that the fog in X3TC wasn't the kind of fog that causes objects far away to not render, but rather it was just an overlay on what was already there, and so caused performance to decrease. Can't find the post at the moment though.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, especially considering the weird design decisions I come across in this game every day. However this one would be straight-up dumb, and in my experience sectors with extremely low visibility actually run faster.
From a technical standpoint it seems like it would be much harder to develop an overlay for this purpose than it would be to just designate an object to fade at <10km or whatever. However it's possible that the fog PARTICLES exist in an overlay, and just by looking at those particles you can tell the textures are pretty big. That is probably what's causing FPS issues.
A mod that only removes the fog particles in these sectors might look a bit weird though, and it looks like there are only 10-20 of these particles on screen in the foggiest sectors. So it would probably look quite weird in exchange for a minor performance increase.
I could be wrong of course, most of this is speculation. Maybe someone from Egosoft could shed some light on this? I am nor interested from a nerd standpoint

No does not look weird at all, just removes fog. No lag at all, but my machine might be making up for that.amirite wrote:
