Heya. I'm working on a crew system concept design document. It doesn't say how this will work with x2 scripts, rather it explores what would happen ideally. I came here for some feedback on what people would like
to see with such a system in place.
Although I"m working with X2, those from the X3 forum can still benefit from the ideas explored here. If there's a comparable thread in the X3 forums, pls link it here!
Here's some questions for ya'll to answer:
1) What types of jobs do you think crew members could have? How do you think their performance will affect you? Should it be large or small?
2) What kind of behaviour would you like to see from your crew? Anyting special? Should they sleep/plot/eat/talk/gamble/fight/murder/joke/etc? Do you want them to all get along, all the time?
3) Are you ok with crew members dying? What about getting ill or disabled? Do you think there should be doctors?
4) What kind of crew member jobs onboard a ship do you think are most important?
5) Do you want to be able to talk with your crew by asking them a series of preset questions? (like: How are you today?)
6) Do you think crew members should have a lot of attributes/skills or only a few? Do you think these things should be visible or behind-the-scenes?
7) What kind of attributes/skills do you think crew members should have. (This questions is related to the one that asks you which jobs do you think are most important)
8) What appeals to you most about having crew members onboard?
9) Would you rather have lots of crew members all across the galaxy, spanning many fleets, or a few very detailed crew members on several ships? (This question is implies that there's a tradeoff you have to make when determing how much detail/behaviour you want the crew to have versus how fast/smooth you want your framerate to be.)
10) How do you think ship crew sizes should be determined? (How many crew members can fit on a small ship versus a large ship)
11) Are there any ideas you have that you'd like to share? Anything you can think of that you think would be fun for them to have or do?
12) I especially need the opinions of scripters. What is possible? What kinds of things can be changed or improved in a script? Can you improve weapons? Shields? Reactor? What?? (For example, we alreayd know that the hull of a ship cannot be changed so there can't be a hull repair system.)
Easiest way to answer is just copy the questions above and then paste them in your reply (don't use Quote to reply.. use Post Reply instead).
And remember to stay on topic.

I would like to see crews in your big ships cockpits. because when i buy a M2 and I'm the only one on the bridge commanding a battle with a bunch of empty seats around me it is sort of fun killing.
:you the captain says "navigation"
navigation officer "yes"
you "move us to coord. 11,5,12
or some such like that would be cool . if you could toggle between flying the ship your self and give orders to have the nav people fly it with you ordering them around that would be even better.
just some of my many ideas lol. if you want more just let me know lol.
:/turns brain off:

I like the looks of this...
1. Crew members should really be in three different forms Crew: Ensigns, Captains, Commanders, Medics and other ranks. Staff should be like cooks, cleaners, engineers. Finally I reckon you should have Citizens this way you could bring more colony ships into the game and all that. The way this would work would be simple... the most important jobs are pre requisites for others... e.g. you cant have aa high military force without cooks as your people would starve to death.
2. I think as the captain of the ship only your high ranking officers should have motives like this.
3. Well lets say the more your ship has been battered to death the more chance their is of crew dying but also if you have lots of medical officers and staff then this should reduce deaths. Same with illnesses... disabled i would not bring into the game as a function.
4. High Ranking officers, Cooks and Engineers. Citizens onboard the ship would be good as families on your very own ship would bring more of a protect and serve feel.
5. I think you should only talk with your high ranked staff. So basically you could ask your high ranking engineers if there are any upgrades that would benefit your ship.
6. Alot of attributes but not many visible. Lower ranked staff should obviously have lesser attributes.
7. Just basic ones really. Like you gunnery officer could have 16 out of 20 points in commanding turrets.
8. I feel more in the game with my own crew assisting me.
9. All over the galaxy however they should not be on anything much smaller than an M6 or transporters ofcourse unless theres only one or two to help with turrets.
10. Simple really;
M1 - 500: All rounded in staff roles.
M2 - 250: 85% military
M3+ - 1: Military Gunner
M3 - 0
M4 - 0
M5 - 0
M6 - 10: 8 military, 1 medic and one engineer
TS - 15: 10 military, 2 medic and one engineer
TP - 100: 50% Citizen, 25% Military, 15% Engineering, 10% Medical
11. Somehow get it to work and i'll be happy enough.
12. Alot of what you want to bring into the game cannot just be thrown into it, you will need to find ways around alot of the problems you will encounter.
I hope you get something like this to work however. Hmmm thinking about it someone in the X3 forum done something like this and theirs was pretty darn good. The name began with A lol... it was very popular I think it was something like Azza's Crew System. Although there is alot more features to X3 many things can still be done on X2 and I hope you keep it X2.
Lord D Out...
