Game Crashing to Desktop

I am running the Steam version of X3:TC version 1.2.1

Vista Ultimate 64 bit

I do not have FFDSHOW installed

Game will crash to desktop repeatably making the game completely unplayable. In game and in menu, before the game engine is even loaded. Newest nvidia drivers installed.

I disabled my on board audio, and still the game CTD'd on me. I have at this point noticed a possible pattern. As I stated above I am running the Steam version of TC and have noticed that there has been a Steam Advert message window minimized to my toolbar the last few times the game crashed. I have disabled every intrusive element of the steam software that I could find in the options settings. I hope this may reduce or even eliminate the CTD's. I would like to know If anyone knows how to get the game on to my drive and playable without having to invoke Steam every time I play the game. Freeing up much needed memory space for X3 run time would be an added bonus.

It seems Steam is not the culprit. I am still getting CTD's with regularity even after ham-stringing the Steam client. I can't seem to see where else the conflict might lie. I guess I will start disabling the graphical bling one element ata time while staying in my native resolution until I achieve stability. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Removed Creative's Alchemy prg. Reinstalled X-fi drivers and audio console. Still no love. CTD's seem to be coming on with more frequency. Funny because during the first 3 or more hours of initial game play CTD's were next to non-existent. Thinking of starting a fresh game to see if there might be a script responsible for the instability. I am running the game vanilla at this point so I am positive that I did not introduce a irreconcilable conflict.

Check in start, control panel, administrative tools, event log and see if there is anything relating to TC.

OK, checked event logging and found one error that was related to X#:TC and FRAPS. Disabled FRAPS and have not had one CTD in over 2 hours of game time. I have noticed improved frame rate, visually of course now that I have no imperical data to go on. Funny its like Hiesenburg's uncertainty principle if I want good playable frame rate I can't know what it is, if I want to know what the frame rate is it will suck. I think this might be the end of this thread.
