Stuttering & Choppy Gameplay with Q6600 & 8800 GTS

Post by Reece »

Here are my system specs:

Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
XFX 680i LT SLI / 4GB Corsair DDR2-6400 (800Mhz)
ECS 8800GTS 512MB (G92) / Antec TPQ-850 PSU
Thermaltake VA8003BWS / Xigmatek HDT-S1283

Yet, even with the horse power I have, I find that in some sectors (especially with many unfriendlies about) the game freezes for about 2 seconds at a time here and there. I'm not quite sure what the deal is.

I'm wondering however, if perhaps X3TC simply is not coded to use Dual-Core (or Quad Core) CPUs very well. Perhaps it isn't coded for multi-threading? Can anyone confirm if perhaps it just won't use more than a single core?

The game isn't acting like an FPS problem. I've used FRAPS. It's literally everything that stops. Curious if anyone else with any high end system has the some issues or not.

With a system that plays Crysis and Far Cry 2 on High settings, I'm baffled as to how I can see any slow down at all in X3.

Thx! :)

Nope its singlethreaded. So the more juice you can squezze out of one of ur cores the better. But it runs better on quad and dual cores since you run the game on one core and the rest of the OS will be on the rest.

I have exactly the same system although my ram is alittle bit overclocked and i have the same issues. Ive put my x3TC gaming on a hold untill the patch gets out.

What kind of patch are we to expect? I've been away from the X3 community for a while, so I'm not up to date on things.

I can't imagine they can patch the game to run multi-threaded. I'd imagine that would take a complete overhaul of the entire game code...?

Anyhow, just curious. :)

I have read from someone who supposedly got info from steam forums or supposedly someone who is trying 1.3 beta and they say egosoft is testing 1.3 beta 3 of the patch.

Only comment about it is improvement in performance.

Rumored ETA less than a month.

Completely unreliable source though.

I just hope they release it soon (tm) since for me this issue that makes the game choke has become a fun-stopper.

Reese: Does the GUI for the game also disappear and then re-appear when these pauses happen? If so read this thread:

Hmm. Can't say I ever noticed my GUI disappear (permanently or flicker for that matter). I'd think I would have noticed that. But, I'll keep my eyes peeled. Interesting thread though.

Thinking about it, I do recall that when it freezes up for a couple seconds, I typically hear some hard drive activity. If I understood that thread properly, we're talking about X3TC not being able to use any more than 2GB of RAM? So it can't load all the data it wants and has to swap with the disk?

I love X3 and all (Both Reunion and X3TC so far), but it seems like they're coding the game for backwards compatibility a bit to much. ;)

That's how its working out for me, try enabling that flag using the tool mentioned in that thread and see how it goes.
