[BUG REPORT] square parantheses cause "unknown" message in log

It is a sufficient condition for receiving an "unknown" empty message that the ship name contain square parantheses either "[" or "]" or both.

This is true for at least messages generated by command completion, or marine training completion; assumably this seems to extend to all situations where the above proposition is true.

I assume that this is reasonably easy to fix and incorporate into the next patch.

Possibly not - square brackets are used for formatting tags.

I have been using them for role tags at the front of names, so I suppose I will have to use normal parantheses. It's a shame as the square brackets suit the X3 font better than rounded brackets.
