Target nearest enemy...

Post by clcabbage »

Not sure the 'Target nearest enemy' ( Shift +T ) is working properly..?

I can see an enemy from the far side of the sector , it could even be within my scanner range... Yet 'target nearest enemy' doen't lock onto it until its extemely close !! ?

I could 'Track target' ( t ) on this enemy from the other side of the sector, so what 'am i :?

I was thinking this was on account of laser range ( maybe it won't lock on until its within the weapons range..? ) , but it didn't appear to improve if i changed to diff. weapon or not ( not sure still checking this ).

If however this is its intended design ( which would be very lame ) then why would you not allow it to atleast go to scanner range ? .... I'd prefer my missiles to be launched before thier within laser range ..!!

You can also target targets in the distance by clicking on them ;) I can't really judge if this issue is a problem only to you or to everyones game, cause as far as I know the target nearest enemy (shift+t) has the same range as the normal targeting (t). I do know that the normal targeting has a quite limited range compared to the clicking of my mouse, but it has always been that way. I think they did it to prevent targeting something in the distance while you want to target something close to you.

I like to think of it as, when you are in range to engage the enemy, targeting software will then pick up on the nearest threat and lock your weapons/turrets on. :)

It does create a minor inconvenience for some combat, since at long range you have to manually select the target if you intend on firing missiles from great distance.

'Target nearest enemy' only targets enemies less than 5km distance. Worked this way in X3R as well. This function isn't overly usefull. It enjoys locking onto things you don't care about at the time, such as harmless M5s when there is 10+ M6s around.

The game never had an efficient, or effective, targeting system.

Of course the end key does a good job of selecting the next enemy in a clockwise movement. Just hit it until you've got the ship you want.
My favourite memory of the X series was babysitting that TL across half the universe in XTension and finally arriving in Getsu Fune to be gifted the TL! I called her Big Bad Orca...

OK... so apparently 5k is infact the range 'Target nearest enemy' will aquire its target ( regardless of weapon )...

AND... the 'Target next enemy' (Home) or 'Target previous enemy' (End) will aquire its target at a much greater range.!!

SO... I'll just have to use 'target next enemy' as a work arround, or continue with using sector map as a list of targets.

Sorry for posting in Tech support, account this appears to be working as intended..

"And thanks for the replies guys, i'd not thought nearest enemy was limited to a fixed range of 5k when the others are not.??"
