Surely it can't be this bad, almost giving up

[Pilinius]

I am getting constant machine lock-up (having to do a hard re-boot).

As an example by "constant" I have just tried playing for 90 minutes and have suffered six crashes from three previous saves. I am finding the game completely un-playable.

No ffdshow on my machine (or at least I can't find it). Removed Nero and no Cyberlink.

Thanks in advance for any help as I am about to give up.

I was having game lock ups everytime I would try to continue from the same saved game file 4, times in a row. Its happened a couple of times from differant saves also. When I use an older game file it starts working ok again. I think in my case some of it is from trying to add scripts. I have gone back to playing X3R till we get another up date.

- disable the RealTek Audio via your BIOS settings, you don't need it at all
- and switch ON the EAX on the Creative card - your system should run TC really well

as "whole system" games, X3:R and X3:TC both use as much of your system's resources as they can get..
sometimes, it's just a question of allowing the game to actually gain access to those resources

- your rig may just need a "tweak" or two..

- what gfx settings are you running the game at, via it's start-up GUI?

I have disabled the RealTek Audio via Bios and removed drivers.
EAX shows as enabled in the Audio Control Panel (but not in the dxdiag, not sure what is happening there, I can't find anything obvious on the web).

When you said my rig might need a tweak or two were those two them or could you point me in the right direction for other tweaks?

Push the a/a and a/f to the maximum possible - your gfx card can cope with this..

Egosoft have stated that there are more refinements due to the game,
but in the meantime there is no reason to restrain your system

- with those extremely high specifications, your rig should cope with X3:TC without too much difficulty

- I'm playing via an HD3850 AGP - and with some tweaks, she copes pretty well..

PS: make sure that you have your monitor set at it's optimum resolution
and set your graphics card to match this..
- the game's GUI should also show the same resolution - get all three in line..

Why do you suggest EAX enabled? Isnt that supposed to put more stress on the game performance?

- because it's handled entirely by the sound card - and X3:TC's stress is mainly on the CPU

- otherwise free up all other areas and run your rig at max, as far as possible
- apart from Textures and Glow in the GUI, everything else seems to be functioning normally

- my rig performs a lot worse, when I reduce the off-CPU settings
( - on mine, that's an old P4 3GHz DualCore, BTW)..

- as I said before - X3:TC is a "whole system" game - it will try to get at as much of your WHOLE rig as possible
- agreed there is stress on the CPU in some cases, but there is no need to compromise in other areas
- give your PC it's head - let the whole thing become available for use..

I would humbly suggest running the game in windowed mode and simultainiously run CPU-Z to see at what MHz your CPU is at while playing the game. I found on my quad core it idled down to 1250 Mhz. I changed my Power profile to high with 100% min processor usage.

As the previous poster stated, I too believe that you can run it at max settings.

That only happens with AMD processors on Windows XP if you don't have the latest drivers for them installed. The OP is running a Core 2 Quad under Vista, so this won't be happening.

Thanks for the replies to this thread. Unfortunately my play experience has been something like ...

Save game - crash on load
Reload previous game - crash flying out of first section (venus)
Reload previous game - crash after jumping out of first section (venus), appears to be when loading new sector
Reload previous game - crash on loading
Crash on startup of game (just after keying esc to bypass intro).

Any more suggestions that might help?

Given the high hdd stress could running raid 1 cause issues?

Any hints appreciated as otherwise I will abandon the game until the next patch and then cross my fingers again.

Thanks for the reply, apologies if these are stupid questions where precisely should I be looking? I look under View Event logs and can't find anything which seems to refer to X3. I can't seem to find a search function.

Upgraded graphics driver again yesterday and got 2.5 hours without a crash which is a record (thought issue might be solved) but then went away, came back and got crash on loading when hitting esc on the egosoft banner.

If you are having to force a re-boot (IE: the NUMLOCK key doesn't respond when it locks up) then chances are you have a hardware problem and not a software problem. While this "could" be related to drivers, depending on what motherboard and RAM you are running it could be a matter of memory timings being off, or even having a bad DIMM.

This game shouldn't cause the kind of crashes you are experiencing. Software will generally never cause any kind of hard-lock (I say generally because I have had drivers cause hard-locks in the past...but most manufacturers are pretty good about this these days)

Have you had any similar crashes or lockups when you weren't running this game? In any other game?

I have run into similar issues with other machines on other games due to hard drive problems and/or memory issues. You have 8GB of RAM, so I would recommend trying to pull out a DIMM or 2 and then try to re-create the issue and repeating until the issue either goes away, or happens consistantly with just 1 DIMM installed, but not with others..,that is where I would start. If it is hard-locking then you will need to hunt the issue down in your hardware first...easiest thing to do before considering wiping your O/S.

I had a similar issue with Age of Conan when I first put the system together, system would hard-lock after playing...discovered that I had a bad connection on my SLI connector. Reseated everything and its been good since.

Also if you are running high-performance RAM then custom timings may need to be adjusted. (My OCZ RAM needs special advanced timings to be set up in order for it to work properly with my motherboard).

No, it's not a stupid question at all.)

Sometimes you don't get an event recorded especially wit a hung pc.

I would check in the application and system logs, if it isn't there not to worry.

Thanks for that feedback and I think you might be right. After never having the issue on another application I upgraded LOTRO to MOM the other day and 5 minutes in had a full lock-up.

Nothing in the logs, but as above it looks like it might be a hardware issue.
