One quick update about performance slow-down issue: one factor at least looks like it may be related to the number of cutscenes played, so if you turn off warp tunnel animation then you will probably reduce the rate at which the slowdown occurs. Not doing plot missions may also help, though this is likely to have a lesser effect since the number of times cutscenes are played in this context is limited.
